Unbuttoning his thick coat, Ruki watched his puppy waggle down the hallway on big paws. He didn't bother to hurry up. He hung up his clothes, wet from fresh snow that came down relentlessly since morning; woolly hat and scarf matching.
"Ran, wait, no! Don't step on my stuff!" He heard his daughter scold the dog in the living room.
Warm slippers put on his feet, he went to check what she was up to this time. A soft laughter escaped his lips at the sight he was greeted with. The basenji cup in her left arm, she tried to sort through whatever he just stepped on with her right, tiny hand, scowl on her usually sweet forehead. The box of Christmas balls he bought yesterday was open and the balls spread all over the carpet, stripes of white fabric, neatly cut, on a small pile in front of Kimberly's crossed legs. He smelled glue.
"Way to treat Ran, sweetheart, he just missed you and wanted to say hi." Ruki said from the door.
"Daddy!" Kimberly beamed, "I missed him too," she hugged the puppy to her chest, "but he stepped on my work."
"Work, huh." Ruki went to sit down next to his daughter. "What's this?" He took Ran from her arms and held him in his lap.
"I was making mommy balls." She said matter-of-factly.
Ruki blinked, a little confused. "Mommy balls?"
"Yes!" She took one of the Christmas balls. "Look."
The vocalist looked, as he was told, at what she made. "Oh no, you didn't." He said, his voice shaking with mirth. Ran tried to get his nose up high enough to sniff on it.
"I did!" She chirped and then went on, bubbling with excitement. "I took that old white t-shirt of mine, you know, the ugly one, and cut it into stripes and then I took this glue you use for the rhinestones and then glued them at one point, waited for the glue to dry and wound the rest around and tied a knot! Now the balls have nosestraps, like mommy, even though they don't even have a nose!"
"You mom doesn't have one, either." Ruki smiled a smile he couldn't help, one of the kind that makes you shake your head and hurts your cheeks and lets your heart skip a beat.
"Mommy has a nose!" She insisted.
"I know he has." He patted her head. "And I love his nose." He bend down. "Just as I love yours." He pecked her's, enjoying the triggered giggle.
"Now, Berry-chan, tell me, does mommy know about the mommy balls?"
"No." He put the glass object down. "They are not finished, anyway. If we had some straw I could put a faux-hawk on them, too."
That was all it took for Ruki to burst into a healthy fit of laughter.
Oh, how he loved his family.

In case someone doesn't know of doesn't get it, that hairstyle of Reita is called faux-hawk, as far as I know.
