Chapter 1
A captivating scenery acted as the backdrop of the residence and schooling area of one of the biggest group of rowdy, over-talented college kids in all of South Korea. Filled with a variety of different people, from the heir of the top international corporation in the country, to the prodigy that came from small-town beginnings. Afternoon classes ended early that day and young people were spilled out all over the campus. It would have been a scenic view to take in and lovely time for Seohyun to just stop and feel the wind caress her hair, if she hadn’t been in such a damn hurry and totally lost.
She really shouldn’t have relied on Kasumi to search up the directions to the SME campus. Kasumi was the Seo family’s maid- she was about fifteen years older than Seohyun, came from Japan (but her Korean was as good as anyone’s) and had been her companion since she was a baby. Kasumi was more faithful to Seohyun than anyone could ever be and did all her duties efficiently. The only real problem was that she was somewhat clumsy and very directionally challenged. Any other day, Seohyun would have relied on the family butler Daeho- however, he had been out on errands when Seohyun had woken up very late that morning (being in America for a year and then coming back to Korea did horrors to your biological clock). Being in a rush, what with frantically packing and making arrangements (and her parents not being freaking home as usual), Seohyun’s only choice was to have Kasumi find the campus.
With today’s technology, you’d think Kasumi would have an easier time finding SME campus, Seohyun brooded to herself. She had left the driver and the car, bidding him to wait until she returned to tell him where to go next. But now, Seohyun was totally lost and had no idea where she was- only that she was definitely NOT at SME University. There didn’t seem to be anyone who would be willing to help her so the only option seemed to be to meander around and figure out where she was.
Anybody who glanced at Seohyun casually would have totally agreed that she was quite a picture. Pale, oval face with soft curves along with a sheen of hair spilling out in long, black angelic waves behind her. Dressed in a casual blouse with skinny jeans and flats to compliment her figure, Seohyun would have easily passed off as a normal pretty college girl.
Anybody who really knew her would know that she was really Seo Joohyun, heiress to a large, successful corporation. And dying to see her best friend, her one true love.
Approximately two to three years had gone by since Seohyun had last seen her best friend, Cho Kyuhyun. He was one year older than her and so thus had gone off to university a year earlier than she had. Kyuhyun had gotten a full scholarship to SME, which even paid for dorm and food. However, his two-person family didn’t make enough to cover trips back and forth between his home and campus so Seohyun never had the opportunity to see him.
They did constantly send emails to each other everyday, and in between enthralling stories of college life, reminded each other of the promise they had made. Unfortunately, when Seohyun left Korea for a year and lived in America, somehow, she couldn’t get the email system she used in Korea to work there. So thus, all communication with her friends and Kyuhyun had been totally cut off for a year.
Seohyun, nervously walking around, increasing her pace frantically, was so wrapped up in her thoughts, she didn’t see the shadow that loomed closer, or the individual that neared right in her direction until she had fully collided with a person and was knocked flat on her butt and dropped all her papers.
“Are you alright, miss?
Seohyun’s heart jumped, being so focused on Kyuhyun, thought she had heard his voice. She looked up to see an unfamiliar boy, face apologetic and offering a hand to her.
Sungmin let out an enormous sigh as he stepped into his old room. Ah. Home sweet home.
As he arranged his things and started to help his butler unpack his things, his mind wandered off to other things. Sungmin wondered how on earth his tall, younger roommate managed to make such a mess of himself in only one hour of being there. He also tried to think of where on earth his cousin could be when her appointment with the dean was today (then he remembered that this was her first time coming here ever).
Sungmin also thought of his tall, cute and lovely girlfriend he couldn’t wait to see. Heart thumping, he reached into his pocket, took out his blackberry and texted her:
“Sooyoung <3 Are you on campus yet?”
A few seconds passed by, then a few more seconds, then a minute. Sungmin frowned impatiently- she usually responded almost immediately. His doubts were erased though when his phone chimed and he opened the message which read:
“Sungmin-oppa! <3 Yup, I’m on my way, you’ll know when I get here keke xD. This is going to be an awesome year <3333”
Sungmin smiled to himself and continued to unpack. Of course, he’d definitely know when she’d get there. After all, the Chois owned what could be easily titled as the showiest collection of cars- to the point where the company’s logo was inscribed the hood of each car. He had always thought to himself how lucky he was that a girl like Choi Sooyoung noticed and liked him, although his own family background was quite respectable.
He couldn’t wait till she and her brother got here along with their cousin Jessica and friend Heechul, because that was when the party really started. The kids of the richest, most influential companies in South Korea always created a ruckus wherever they went. And Sungmin couldn’t be more grateful to be friends with them.
Yes, this was going to be one hell of a senior year. As long as what Jongwoon hinted at was just a rumor, it was going to be fantastic. No way was Sungmin going to let anything change that.
Yoona sighed as she sank down in her bed in absolute frustration. Why, oh why, did her parents have to be so unreasonable? It had already been two weeks since the announcement and no matter how much she argued, reasoned and pleaded with her parents, the chances of the marriage decision becoming final were increasing everyday.
“It’s for the benefit of our company, Yoona,” her mother had told her. “You know the Kims are extremely wealthy and influential. Why are you always being so selfish and only thinking for yourself?”
Yes, Yoona knew about the Kims and how prestigious they were. But she still seethed at how her mother dared to say she was always selfish. Her whole life she had obediently did whatever her parents told her to do, mindlessly following the path that had been laid out for her- until two years ago. When she argued for days with her parents to let her attend SME University. It had been a hard battle, but one in which Yoona finally came out victorious.
How awfully unfair it was that they were now using that one time she asked for something against her. Especially because this would be tearing her away from him, the one she truly cared about, the one that made her feel special and the world look a little less gloomy…
Her phone chimed. Speak of the Devil, Yoona mused to herself as she picked up the phone. “Yubasaeyo?”
“Hey, Yoong.” A smooth, masculine voice came through the phone.
“Hi, oppa.”
“You seem depressed. Is it still because of your parents?” Yoona had cried to him a week ago over this and he had done his best to comfort her, even skipping work to meet with her at the park to spend the day with her in each others’ arms. Yoona sighed and said:
“Yeah. They’re so pig-headed sometimes. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“Well…it’s not going to change anything. Even if it is my former best friend…it’s still not going to change how much I love my deer Yoong.” Yoona smiled to herself, heart overflowing with love for him.
“Where are you now, oppa? I’m already at campus.” Yoona heard him sigh over the phone.
“Hyukjae woke up really late. I’m getting a ride from him and- HEY. STUPID MONKEY, GIVE ME BACK THE PHONE-!”
“Yoona~~~~ Donghae’s a liar, I didn’t sleep in that late. Oh well. He still loves meeeeee. But don’t worry, he still loves you more.” Yoona laughed as she heard his best friend’s loud voice shout through the phone.
“Yah! Stupid Hyukjae. Yeah, so we’re still on our way, I’ll come find you as soon as I get here. Bye, Yoona, I love you.”
Yoona giggled and said, “I love you too, Donghae-oppa.”
Seohyun, taking the boy’s hand, hoisted herself up clumsily and stumbled a bit. “Omo, I’m so sorry about that,” she apologized hurriedly. She took examined the boy a bit. He was of average height leaning a bit on the short side and had messy, uncombed hair. He was wearing a button down shirt, jeans and Converses. There was nothing very remarkable about him, except that his eyes were squinted a bit and he had huge dark eye bags under them, as if he didn’t get enough sleep the night before.
His face was a bit handsome and Seohyun couldn’t help but stare a bit before he said, “Well…you really should watch where you’re going next time.” It wasn’t a reprimand but a simple statement. His voice had a certain husky yet nasally tone to it, which Seohyun found interesting to hear.
“Yes…um, excuse me? Could you tell me how to get to SME campus from here?” Seohyun asked the boy. He thought for a moment then told her the directions. She thanked him and hurried off to find her driver and the car. As she glanced back behind her, Seohyun saw the boy staring back at her, which she found a bit eerie. However, she shrugged it off as she thought of other things, one primarily being her now being late to her appointment with the dean of SME University.
