Wow! Nice contributions! You know, I know that we share some musical tastes and that's one thing we never got around to discussing at ALL when you were visting. Next time. Devil Woman- think that's by Cliff Richards. I love that song!! You got the MP3? PLEASE send it to me. Bobby Dylan- gotta love that man. What a masterpiece that guy is. I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but the first time I heard the Blood On the Tracks album, I sat and listen the whole way through without moving and fucking cried my face off. Close to home I guess. Honestly, I could have made an entire list with just sad Dylan tunes. A couple I forgot that are so great and sad- "Mama You Been On My Mind" and "Seven Curses". Good stuff. Indeed (that was for azilla). Strange Fruit- how in the HELL did I miss that one? Jeez. Billie's is definitive for sure, but if you haven't heard Nina Simone or Cassandra Wilson's versions, check em out. You know Cassandra Wilson? Think you'd dig her.

Just about anything by Tori Amos (don't laugh) or Halou ... but if I want to get really shitty in my beer, Southern style, I break out my collection of "classic country", much to the dismay of my dear poisonkitty. I've infiltrated his head with such goings on & he secretly hates me & wishes I was dead I bet. If he comes home & I'm listening to Tori, he'll find *any excuse* to leave the house that he can ... he'll even run errands, it's funny.

Uh oh, better not let azilla catch you talking about Tori!! She just LOVES Tori, just ask her about it..... I have to say you just can't beat classic country for truely sad shit. I don't have much on my list, other than the late great Charlie Rich (PLEASE check him out if you don't know who he is), but there more sad classic country out there than... well, than you can shake a stick at! YEEHAW!!! What'd you think of Gantz?

Definitely don't tell a_zilla about my Tori "problem". See, I'm kinda closeted. Most of the people bashing Tori & her fans on Mark's post here, aren't even aware that he was talking about *me*!! Haaa. No, I didn't feel the need to speak up. Listening to Tori is like doing cocaine ... do it in the bathroom with no one watching.

"Oh shit somebody's at the door! Hide the Tori, quick!!" Too fucking funny. Thanks for that. The only difference is that when it's cocaine, everybody wants to come in get some.

I also should add that I listen to "post-apocalyptic folk" genre as well - Legendary Pink Dots, Death in June, Current 93 & the like.

And not to be too emo, but I can totally relate to this:

Really, I think it's just the fact that I can somehow relate to those feelings of pain and loss, more so than ones of happiness and joy.

I think I've posted something similar myself a few times. For some of us, life is NOT like a Norman Rockwell painting & yeah, sadness can be easier to identify with than pure naive joy. Not that I don't appreciate that in others, I just can't relate to it myself so easily. I've fought & scratched for my happiness. But ya know, people who've pulled themselves up from their fingernails a few times in this world are often more interesting anyway!

Does anybody live in a Norman Rockwell painting? Honestly, I'd consider myself a fairly happy person. Life doesn't shake me down too often, but I can still relate to that sadness moreso. Maybe it's because the things that make us sad are more common between us all than are the things that make any given individual happy. You dig? I mean ice cream might make someone happy, but it doesn't do much for me, and for someone with sensitive teeth, it could make them really sad (ie in agony). But getting dropped on your head by someone you care about? Now that's gonna hurt most everybody in a similar way... It's all relative right?

And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.

Don't forget Dusty Springfield. Or Astrud Gilberto!

Oh how I love me some Astrud Gilberto!!! I spent one miserably hot and lonely summer with her voice as my only company (with the exception of all the dead folks buried in the cemetary immediately across the street from my shitty little cinderblock abode, affectionately known as the "brick oven"). I was obsessed with Bosa Nova and her in particular. My favorite track of her's is "Manha de Carnaval". I'm not sure what the lyrics suggest since they are in Portuguese- a beautiful language- but I can tell by the melody and her delivery that they MUST be sad.
