I'm sorry about your hamster. I don't know if it's too late or what, but the best way to give a hamster medicine is to pick it up. Its back against your chest, one hand holding him on the chest under his arms, the other supporting his rump. This way he doesn't kick out against a hard floor and accidentally hurt himself. Then you have someone else try to give the syringe through the side/corner of the mouth. You'll probably never get through the front...It'd be real hard, at least.
And I think you should stick it out as long as you're comfortable. I'm not sure how to tell if he's in pain, but you know your hamster best. I guess it's whenever you think he's at that point. Good luck with it all. I hope he gets better.

if the pain gets that bad, he'll go into shock and die. i'm pretty sure.
so keeping him alive is probably better.
unless it starts to be really gross.
