I feel like I have no friends lately. Well, you've got one more LJ friend, if you like - I came across your old LJ and found your scribblings interesting and quite far from nonsensical babble. I just thought I'd post here and say "hello".
Sometimes this world is just too much to deal with and sometimes I just wish I could fastforward through the monotonous parts like this. Oh, definitely. On a related note, I've written a bit of SF here and there and a lot of it is predicated on "fast time" as Dan Simmons calls it ("bullet time" as the Matrix genre has bastardized it) - the ability to change time perception and kick into a higher speed of reaction as well. It certainly isn't just for dodging bullets and shattering whatever is being swung at Clark Kent's face this week.
I was using it to mean "science fiction", though the rec.arts.sf.* USENET newsgroups use a broader definition ("speculative fiction") that includes fantasy in the style of The Lord of The Rings. As the rec.arts.sf.* frequently-asked questions (FAQ) list explains:
1. What does the 'sf' in 'rec.arts.sf.*' mean? The 'sf' means 'Speculative Fiction'. According to the call for votes that created the original hierarchy, this was defined as: Both science fiction and fantasy, as well as that vast blurred mass of material in between.
