My problem with emo is that it's like calling a genre CREATIVE. All music is creative and all music is emotional in it's own right. The only difference is, emo flaunts it's emotionality. I get the impression that a lot of bands write emotional lyrics for the sake of being emotional with no real meaning or heart behind their lyrics.

If there's one thing that's worse than genuine emotion (note: sarcasm), it is fake emotion.

While a lot of people might not admit it, I think all of the people that say they cannot stand emo anymore (that just happened to be all about it a year or so ago), are just in a post phase. I can only imagine they just burnt themselves out listening to it, and feel that now it all sounds the same. So why bother right?

It's time to gorge our ears with synth pop until we get sick of that.

I just give all music its time and space. I do not listen to much emo anymore, but I'm not going to spit no it either just because it may be easy to consider myself as someone who wants to expand his tastes with highly creative and experimental masterpieces.

you will note that i have marked the comment as being past the line.
i hate homeless junkies that doodle all day while drunk on a careful mixture of rubbing alcohol, scope and vanilla extract as much as the next skinny white guy, but attacking a man's goatee?!?!?? you're really pushing it. you have an attitude problem. what are you gonna do with your life? you're cruisin' for a bruisin'. you're on self-destruct. it's my way or the highway... ummm, and other axioms that a parental figure would spout ( ... )

there are so many levels of emo that i can't really argue for or against. for example, one of my favorite bands of all time JAWBREAKER... easily fit under the 'emo' umbrella.

however, the problem with MOST emotional punk rock is that is sucks ass. it's pretentious, whiny, sell-righteous and borrrring.

emo music was at its peak in the late 90s when it was about midwest kids screaming about love in their rec rooms. bands like cap'n jazz, early guk etc. whatever that music has become doesn't sit well with me. i don't know how anyone can put in a saves the day album and not laugh.

p.s. i'm sick of electroclash.

first of all, james you should be doing your essay and not watching "everything loves rayman"

second i agree with dan's first point. and that is not saying at all that i don't like emo music cause there are some artists who can really show that they do have that feeling of emotion behind their music. conor o'burst does a pretty good job (he does over do it after a while but he does put a lot of emotion behind his music and i love it) also bands like the jealous sound when they released their EP it was nothing short of perfect.

i just think it is a dumb term that gets tossed around too much and people who listen to it don't wnat to be regarded as "sissies" so they get defensive. tell someone (i.e fairless) that thursday is EMO he will cry and defend it saying that it isn't. Thursday is a form of emo (i guess), geoff rickley and thursday put a lot of emotion behind his/their lyrics/music and it works (really well)

enough of me blabbing
peace

Listen to Vince (and Black Sabbath) unscene_one November 20 2003, 12:18:01 UTC
Lovers,

I guess the ultimate purpose of my post (besides my love for watching my favorite people give their two cents on things) was kind of what vince was talking about...So a bunch of punkesque indy rock even folky type music got called emo. So, why cant people get past the name? I just find that facinating. Take Rock for example...no one ever seems to get hung up on the fact that rock is called rock. Rock and Roll was a term coined by a Radio DJ back in the day who thought the music sounded like sex (get it, Rocking and RrrrrRRRRrrrolling about...true story for all you trivia buffs-no one)so do you see Vince getting all worked up about how the new Darkness album has too much of a sexual edge to it? (not that would even be an issue those dudes are pure sex in those getups) or that the new strokes disc is too concerned with being in a garage while they rock...wuh?... its just a name...OH MAN! I HATE HIP HOP all they talk about is jumping up and down like Rabbits...
