BECAUSE OH MY GOD
(bb Justin on soccer team :'))
( I WISH THERE WERE MORE RECENT PICS IMAGINE HIM PLAYING WITH HOW HIS BODY IS NOW AND LIKE HIS TATS AND HIM SWEATING AND RUNNING AND EVERYTHING???? JUSTIN PLAY SOCCER AGAIN JFC)
Imagine them on a team together and playing pranks and being fierce and competitive with each other. They compete for the top spot on the team but they're still best-soccer-friends with underlying sexual tension that everyone else has picked up on, and when they play together they work like to halves a whole and DECIMATE the competition.
Ugh and it's even better if they're in like different cliques at school or whatever (note: let's say it's a universe where there's only one-year age difference instead of three so that Justin is a junior and Louis is a senior. they're both 17 when the story starts but Louis turns 18 over winter break), Louis hangs out with all the gorgeous people: the boxing champion Liam Payne and his art god boyfriend Zayn and the school rock star Harry Styles. They smoke and go to parties and make out with people an drive around in Harry's cool car and everything else cool kids do.
Justin hangs with Twist, Ryan, and Niall. They skate and play video games and share everything and have their own booth at the local hangout, where Niall is a preferred customer and generously shares his privileges. They're a medium level of popular and they were the school's foremost troublemakers until Louis Tomlinson (TomlinSIN, the girls call him with a sigh. Cause damn that boy is fine) showed up. With Louis around suddenly the popular crowd is more interesting, and the principal's office is definitely busier. Niall likes him, Twist hates him, and Ryan doesn't give a flying fuck either way.
(JUST HAD A THOUGHT. BESIDE SIDE-ZIAM, ALSO SIDE NARRY! AS JUSTIN AND LOUIS GET CLOSER AND THEIR GROUPS CLASH HARRY AND NIALL ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO GET ALONG! AND FALL FOR EACH OTHER!!! YAAAY!)
Niall (who is somehow accepted into any social situation no matter what and used to be best friends with Liam) wanders over to stand with school royalty during the playoff game. To spy on them for Twist, who thinks they're trying to lure Justin away. Not because Harry has soft looking lips and skin and hair. Noooope. That's now the reason at all.
Okay so let's say one day, Twist and Louis get in scrap over something petty, and in the end Louis humiliates Twist with his sharp tongue. Twist get's pissed off and the fight gets physical, but when the teacher comes to break it up everyone swears they don't know who threw the first punch. (It was Twist). Louis walks to the principal's office with a swagger and smirk, and Twist is even MORE pissed because that's usually his game. Later at Justin's house they're all hanging out and Twist has a black eye forming and basically he's really embarrassed Justin feels for Twist and all, but he DID start it. That aside, he knows he's going to have to start icing out the new guy out of pure loyalty, even though they've had pretty good rapport going since Louis sits behind him in English.
So the next day in English Louis tries to pass Justin notes and talk to him like usual but Justin ignores him. Louis figures out what's going on and starts quietly telling jokes, until Justin snorts laughing out of the blue and the whole class turns around to look at him.
After everyone turns back around and the lesson starts again, Justin slides him note that says Happy?!
Louis note back says Very :) hey I'm thinking about trying out for the soccer team here. I played footie back home. I hear you're on the team?
Justin writes back,Yeah. Co-captain last year but he moved away during summer.
L: Yeah? I think I'm gonna go for it.
Justin isn't sure how he feels about it, because he thinks he really could be friends with Louis, but they both already have groups, and in this town/school loyalty makes you. It won't matter if he thinks he can have both, because if he starts hanging out with Louis without being forced to, he's immediately going to be put in a really bad position. So he write back DEFINITELY, BRO!
and I he glances back to see Louis' smile. He doesn't know why he wants to see more of Louis so bad, but he knows that if they're both on the soccer team together he'll be able to without endangering friendships.
That afternoon, Louis arrives to try out and basically kicks everyone's ass. Justin barely holds his own. It's deeply humiliating, because Louis only broke a light sweat, and when the coach lets out an impressed whistle and calls Louis over, he has the nerve to shoot Justin a wink and smile. A WINK! Not surprisingly, Louis eventually gets offered the position of co-caption, and Justin has the feeling he's just barely holding on to the whole "co" thing. Coach Scooter makes it very clear that he thinks Justin could learn from Louis.
The truth of it is, Louis is insanely good, and if Justin wants to keep up he's going to have to practice a lot harder. He's embarrassed, but mostly because for some reason he'd expected to be the best one on the team again. Never expect to be best, always work hard because there's always someone better Coach Scooter has drilled that into him a thousand times and he STILL managed to forget.
Still, despite all that, he finds himself genuinely happy for Louis if only because of the way he's smiling after practice. They exchange numbers and agree to start practicing together.
And so it begins.
brb crying about bb soccer player Louis!
From that time on, Justin and Louis constantly compete with each other on the field, but at the same time are great leaders for their team. They both stay late and practice together, joking and laughing and talking whenever they take a break. Basically, they're friends, except they try to kick the shit out of each other if coach wants them to run drills on opposite teams, and after practice they wave goodbye and go with their respective groups. They don't talk outside of practice, English class, and the occasional text. It keeps the peace.
And that would be it, really, except there's this...thing. An undercurrent to their words and looks and smiles, a thin sliver of something running through their conversations. Neither of them can quote put a finger on it, so they ignore it. But their friends notice. Zayn and Liam start teasing Louis that they should set up double date, and Ryan or Twist will always make dumb boyfriend jokes because of that dumb poem/rap Justin wrote for Selena freshman year.
So I think the general idea would be that this underlying sexual tension would be obvious to literally everyone, from the way they manhandle each other when they're playing in practice, to the obvious borderline-flirting in English class, to the way you know who their texting by the huge dumb smiles on their faces. Still, they don't move outside of their designated social stations when they're not supposed to, and it's starting to frustrate their friends.
So Harry talks to Liam and Zayn, and they all agree to corner Niall and talk him into helping. Because Twist would never let himself get cornered, and they doubt Ryan would get involved in anything even vaguely dramatic. Niall is chill and compliant but also helpful. Plus, he, unlike everyone else in town, isn't really bothered about the social status thing.
So Niall agrees to help, and ropes Ryan into it (For true love!) and then Twist wants in because he's sick of Justin acting like a lovesick puppy. Or that's what he says. Really, everyone agrees he's secretly a romantic.
So then matchmaking hijink's ensue, with Ryan and Twist bickering, Zayn and Liam being cute couple, Niall and Harry edging closer to each other and flirting like crazy, and a very confused Louis and Justin. In the end, they find love on their own (I imagine really gorgeous scene at night on the soccer field after they win the championship game, and they've both cleaned up and Louis offers to drive Justin to the party. they sit in the middle of the field lazily batting a ball back and forth, and have this great talk about stuff and circle round and around their feelings until it comes in too close and they HAVE to say it and...by the time they get to the victory party they're a couple), without their friends help.
But first, friendships almost fall apart and then get repaired, Justin has birthday and it turns into a huge mess, house parties happen and so do drunken love confessions, Niall and Harry are kind-of-sort-of-dating, and Louis and Justin take a shot at becoming state champions.
*note, I might actually have to research soccer if I end up writing this myself. SIIIGH
