I read a statistic recently that you're more likely to accidentally die in your own bathtub than to die in a terrorist attack. So I don't think it's something you should worry too much about...
But at the same time, I feel ya -- I'm flying tomorrow and I admit that I'm more nervous than I usually am. :\
Well normally yeah, but in DC when there's an alert? The odds of at least being in proximity to something go way up. Also, stats like that don't really matter, do they? It's much safer to ride in an airplane than to drive a car or even cross the street, but people are a lot more afraid of planes than cars. Plus, if you ARE hurt by something, all the stats in the world won't make it better.
True, although close proximity isn't necessarily in danger. My mom was in DC for 9/11 -- actually only a few blocks from the Pentagon -- but she wasn't actually hurt. I think she was really shaken, of course, but so was everyone on 9/11.
It's not so much danger as...the feeling panic and fear that is associated with stuff like that. Like, I'm not worried about getting hurt, I'm worried about being in the middle of the city-wide clusterfuck if it does happen.
Oh, I totally feel you - there was a terrorist threat once that made me stand well a distance from trash cans in the street because I was afraid they might blow up! :/
UGH I know bb. I'm kinda worried too. It was worse in the Bush years when they were constantly reminding us the color terror levels. Not looking forward to feeling that kind of anxiety again. *hugs*
Yeaaah it's def not ideal, but I think as long as you stay away from bridges and tunnels while driving and stuff you should be fine, supposedly it's a car bomb, no? IDK, you could just stay in all weekend and be totally safe, but there are so many things I have to do Downtown this weekend, since I want to see the 9/11 exhibit at American History and got a free pass to the Newseum on Sunday (I mean, $16 saved!). Hopefully it will be okay, and stopped/not happen...be safe! *hug*
