~*~

At the age of 34, Evan Lorne is one of the hottest actors on the planet. He has numerous awards, three Academy winning films under his belt and casting agents literally knocking down his door, offering him money and everything else under the sun to get him onboard

At the age of 35, Evan Lorne disappears from the spotlight, he drained his account, sold his house and his car, bought a motorbike and left with just the clothes on his back, and over a million dollars in his rutsack.

He sold his motorbike and gave the money from it to a homeless person he passed on the street. He bought a plane ticket to Australia, and moved to a small suburb, Strathfieldsaye, that was a few kilometers from Bendigo, a growing city in the bush.

He bought a house and some land and was welcomed into the small community where everyone knew everyone else. They knew who he was, but apart from a few instances, they let him live how he wanted.

There’s a small bunch of stores in Strath, as the locals call it, where there’s a supermarket, a hairdresser, a fresh fruit and veggie store, a fish and chips shop, a doctors and a pharmacy.  A petrol station finishes them off, and he’s quite happy here.

His neighbors to the left have a teenage girl of 14, Danielle, and she pops up at odd moments. She’s smart for her age, and could probably become anything she wanted; but when asked what she wants to do, she describes a dream of continuing on with her family’s farm. Evan’s never met her parents, and in one confession she told him her mother died in a lab accident when she was 6. That’s why her father works the farm now, he used to be some big scientist but he couldn’t stand it after he lost her, so  they moved here.

Danni says she gets her hair from her mother, Katie, the soft brown tones more often than not pulled back into a ponytail so it stays out of the way. She has stunning blue eyes which she tells him come from her father, as does her crooked smile.

Evan wants to meet him, because Danni describes him with a passion that only falls second to her passion for her dream. She calls him a genius, and the love that shines from her eyes tell him more than her words ever could.

When Evan finally, finally meets him, he’s not what he expected. Danni was right about the eyes and crooked smile, but he pictured some loving figure. Rodney scowls at him on site, and instantly demands to know if he’s the one his daughter is always raving on about. When Evan shrugs Rodney rolls his eyes and launches into a speech with lots of hand waving about how he better not be influencing his daughter inappropriately.

But then Danni walks in and Rodney’s face softens just a bit, and she hugs him and kisses his cheek, introduces him to Evan Lorne, who she describes as having more than half a brain. Evan raises an eyebrow at the speculative look Rodney throws him, and lets a half grin slip out. That seems to be a good thing, because Rodney sighs heavily and says he can stay for dinner if he can convince Danni to set the table. Danni jumps up and down and thanks him, before running from the room. Rodney smiles fondly after her and turns back to Evan and tells him to make himself comfortable while Rodney makes tea.

They all sit down at a rickety old table in the kitchen and Rodney dishes out a delicious looking roast and baked potato combo, and Evan’s mouth waters. They all dig in and conversation flows easily between bites, and Evan feels right at home.

~*~

He’s known the McKays for two years now, and not once have they mentioned that they know about his past. Danni knows, because she told him. He’s not sure about Rodney, but he doesn’t think Rodney really cares one way or another.

~*~

One evening Danni comes over, and she’s a mess. She babbles for the first five minutes before taking a deep breath and explaining calmly that Rodney had been dating this guy for over a year, and the jerk just broke up with him over the phone. She explains that Rodney had hung up the phone, stared at it for a full ten minutes then left the house without saying a word. That was an hour ago, and now Danni doesn’t know he it is.

Evan calls Elizabeth Weir, the nice lady that owns the cattle farm across the road, and she’s over in a flash to take Danni back to her house until Evan can find Rodney.

He pulls on a coat and grabs a flashlight, heading out straight away and not letting himself dwell on the fact that Rodney’s missing. He didn’t know Rodney was Bisexual, but he suspected as much.

He searches for half an hour before he finds Rodney. He’s sitting on the bank on the side of the McKays'  dam, arms wrapped around his legs and shivering in the cold. He only had a thin t-shirt on, and Evan shrugs off his coat and drapes it around his shoulders before sitting down beside him.

They don’t speak, and Evan knows the break up must of hit Rodney hard. He realizes from the barely coherent mumbling that Rodney probably loved this guy, and Evan wants to punch his face for the way he’s made Rodney now.

They sit for another ten minutes, with only a quick call to Elizabeth to tell her Rodney’s okay. Rodney leans into him, and Evan automatically wraps an arm around him. He feels a warm wetness against his shoulder, but doesn’t say anything. He’s never seen Rodney cry, and he knows that Rodney must have really loved this guy for this to happen.

Rodney’s barely audible sobs stop, and then his arms come around suddenly and hug him tight. Evan lets him, and a soft smile touches his lips. He doesn’t know why, but he presses a kiss to Rodney’s temple, and whispers that it’ll be alright.

It seems to be enough, because Rodney tilts his head up to look at Evan, and smiles.

Evan smiles back, and finds himself lost in deep blue eyes that reveal a world of hurt, but now with a spark of hope.
