This is a poem I wrote back in February. I've been going back over some of the poetry I've written in the past year, and this poem really stood out to me.
The Essence of Being
You mesmerize me with your
whispering silver lining.
Sing it open, quiet soul.
A sort of strange enchantment,
Let me sink too far to fall.
The promise of another life
The idea of a different time
Something has to change my world.
Whisper unto the rising horizon,
That holds a ray of hope.
It splits me open,
Drowning me inside its optimism.
A flood of shivering gold.
You try to raise me to your level
You try to make me whole
Bringing back the innocence
of all the years that have been sold
to the ideals of the past.
The realization that you've allowed me to arrive at,
All is only one.
We try to run from our intentions
We try to hide from all we are.
We allow ourselves to believe that we are the only ones.
That the soul of that child isn't a part of us all.
Too afraid to function,
We allow ourselves to bleed of arrogance and dysfunction.
All the things we want to be, all things we are
All the things we want to see,
Seem to hold no purpose in the world that we now know.
Too willing to compromise, even the purest one is tainted.
Not willing to take the time to discover a different life.
One where freedom is inside us all and the truth would reign forevermore.
What exactly is being shown that
so many others don't seem to know
I wrote this yesterday, while studying for my English Final.

Once upon a dream
In the bitter desert rain
He did sing to me
