I've been on LJ but not on my personal journal much. Spending a lot of my free time in LJ RP land lately, and then it's all work work work besides that. ;;;
Yeah I've noticed that LJ RP Land is usually about as addictive and soul stealing as WoW is for me, hehe. As long as you're having fun, and not hurting anyone, nobody can say anything! :D
Yes, there are (and have been) ongoing cuts and talk of more cuts across the UK and beyond, but to me that doesn't mean that complacency is an adequate response.
These kinds of actions by administration should be galvanizing, and they should be catalysts for action and protest, not a kind of anesthetized acceptance. If the question is where to make funding cuts, then we need to be seriously asking why college administrators have salaries of hundreds of thousands of pounds per year, while at the same time claiming there is no choice but to cut entire departments.
Not saying that at all! I've had some contact with some people in some of the teaching unions involved and I knew it's been bubbling under the surface for a while
Signed. That seems to become a trend - reminds me of the decision to shut down the UK's only palaeography chair at King's College a few months back. Short-sighted, stupid neoliberal wankers :(.
Veeeeeeery much agreed! I'm actually at King's, so I'm well acquainted with what has been going on there. The shutting down of that chair is very publicized, but in some ways not even the most egregious of the cuts that the administration there wants to make
( ... )
Indeed, and it isn't new in the least. Bill Readings wrote his fantastic book on the topic, The University in Ruins, back in 1997, and yet it seems that in more than 10 years few people have really grappled seriously with what he had to say
( ... )
Very good! Getting the word out is definitely important.
I don't know the particular news about where you are, but have you heard about the May 5th day of action? I'm sure it's too far for you to come down for, but idk if there are any kinds of solidarity protests or the like happening in places outside of London.
Despite the fact that administrators very much want to put a face on all this like everyone is just accepting and complacent (even if they have to outright LIE to paint that picture), there are at least voices speaking loudly against accepting the cuts with any kind of resignation or "grace."
