Somehow, and don't ask him how he got the idea, McCoy thought Med School would be different. The thumping music from upstairs, however, proved otherwise. He shoved a pillow over his head, counting the decibels and hoping he wouldn't have to treat punctured ear drums in the morning.

The sirens blared all around him. He tried to push them out of his head for a moment, so he could remember the procedures. He'd done them dozens of times before, and half the time he could do them in his sleep. But he wasn't sleeping now, was he? This was real life. And now all that practice had to be put to use, damn it, because that real life was slipping away by the seconds. So Dr. McCoy ignored the growing headache, and reached for the hypospray.

Funnily enough, the world didn't look as different as he thought it would halfway down three shots of bourbon. But maybe they'd look different in the morning. He tried to ignore how familiar the glass looked, or how the shouts in the bar around him all started to sound like his wife. Leonard nursed his headache the only way he knew how, and tried not to think about his father doing the same. Once upon a time, in a house not too far from here.

Ivan dreams. Sometimes there are nightmares. Visions from the past, thoughts about the future, realities from the present. All of them build, in tiny little ways. But sometimes there are dreams of sunflowers and warm places. Once, not to long ago, Ivan remembers when his dream was invaded in tiny little ways, turned different from the way they usually go. The sun still shines and the flowers still grow, but there was someone there who didn't belong. And all Ivan could think of, beneath the peace and quiet in his dreams, was how much he wanted him to leave.

Sometimes, Ivan had friends. Long ago, back when he was young. They were allies. For the time being. Then they all went away. Some of them attacked him, while treaties were discussed and winter grew closer. Some of them moved on, to people who they used to hate but preferred to him. And so Ivan learned to play these games, where you said one thing but meant another. Where "friend" meant "foe" and "forever" meant "for now". And so when Minato said he was his friend, Ivan laughed and remembered his games.

Ivan stands in the ruins of a city. There's blood in the streets and rubble in the sidewalks. And there's someone there now, who's name is Minato. Why he's there, Ivan doesn't know. He knows that whatever he's planning can't be good. He knows that this can't end well, when the soldiers begin to shout into the smoky sky. And he knows, more than anything, that this will result in nothing but pain. Well. He asked for it, didn't he? When he said he'd be his friend.

Five problems Ema solved with science!, and one that needed a different approach.

It was just a chemistry set, or at least that's what Lana said when Ema opened her present. But from the way Ema's eyes lit up, it seemed like more than just test tubes and non-reactive chemicals in a bottle. She mixed solutions all day, accidentally getting some on the carpet. And when she was able to clean up the mess using club soda and a little more...chemistry, Ema knew that this was something special.

She liked to make lists. Lots and lots of lists. She'd only been in third grade for a few weeks now, and Ema's already made lists about her classmates, the lessons, the math homework, and a few other things she forgot about halfway through science class. Nothing in it felt the same as her chemistry set at home, of course, but they talked about planets and plants and volcanoes and Ema liked all of those things. And when Lana asked about her lists, Ema smiled and told her sister she was only doing research.

Ema carefully doodled the trajectories in her notepad, so that when the catapult launched it would send the egg flying. It took awhile, but it was worth it. It didn't feel the same as her new and improved chemistry set, but this was physics. Ema didn't quite understand it, but she played with protractors and drew the lines to solve the problems.

Five things Fry got horribly wrong, and one thing he got right (but never found out he did).

There's smoke. There's fire. There's bombs bursting in air. There's blood all around him, the blood of his people burning inside him. There's rubble. There's ashes. The city burns and falls to pieces and Ivan has to pick them all up. He thinks of a place to call home, where he can be safe from the bombs for a moment. He's stunned when he doesn't picture Moscow. Just an apartment, somewhere safe. Somewhere far away from here. But that doesn't make sense, so he shakes his head and carries on.

They talked about Tchaikovsky today. Yesterday, it was Stravinsky. Tomorrow, maybe it'd be Shostakovitch. All he knows is that when he talks about music with him, he feels like he's alive somehow. Part of it, in a way he hasn't been since 1812, since 1912, since yesterday, since before all of this started. He wants to talk about music with him forever. And, just for a second, he wants to meet him. Somewhere far from here, where there is music that the government doesn't want to control.

He talks to them. Not just one anymore. He's started to think of them as a...well, a them. A group of people. All together, seperate pieces becoming one. When he talks to them, they feel like a family. When he visits them, with Minato still bleeding from Stalingrad, it feels like he's intruding on something secret. Something that doesn't quite belong to him. The next time Minato offers to let him visit, Ivan says no. He says he's busy with the war, and he is. But there's so much more than that. Something far away, in a language that he can't speak just yet.
