Collapse is a great book, you're welcome to borrow it if you like. The chapter on Viking colonisation of Greenland is particularly interesting, as they desperately cling to the old traditions while slowly starving to death (and getting into some awesome sounding fights with Native Americans along the way).

The World Without Us might well be up your street as well.
