"So ... Akanishi Jin ... You are my best friend?" Kame asked, wanting to confirm.
"Yes, and you usually call me Jin." Jin smiled gently at Kame, caressing his hair lovingly.
"Okay ... J-J-Jin ... " Kame said awkwardly.
"It's okay, you'll get used to it.." Jin's smile warmed Kame's heart, and Kame didn't know why. He just felt really comfortable around Jin, as if Jin's not a stranger, as if he knew Jin for ages.
"Will you be with me till I regain my memory?" Kame was insecure. He didn't want to be alone, at least not for now.
"Of course, silly. I have always been with you and I will always be, as long as you want me to." Jin's smile was gentle. It was no longer the smile best friends give each other. It was a smile of love; true love.
"So, Jin ... Tell me more about myself."
"Well, your parents have both passed away when you were 14 and you have a brother who is younger than you by 4 years. His name is Kamenashi Rei. He was adopted by your parents, but you have always treated him like he was your blood brother. You have a wife and her name is Horikita Maki. You and I both manage the largest advertising company in the country; Akame Corporations. It was a company built from scratch by both your father and mine and ever since my father retired 5 years ago, we were the ones who managed it until last year ... when we got into a car accident and you went into coma for a year; I had to take over your work and slog my ass off alone. I'm glad you are awake now, Kame. I am no longer alone ... I mean, I am no longer working alone. "
"Okay ... So my brother is called Kamenashi Rei. So what do I usually call him?"
"You just call him Rei, or idiot, or stupid, or silly. It varies with the situation. Both of you are really close, though not as close as you and I."
"How about my wife? What do I call her?"
"Usually you just call her dear, or Maki. Nothing special."
"She is my wife and I don't call her anything special? Er ... Were we very loving?" Hearing that made Jin's heart ache somehow.
"Yeah, I think you both are rather loving. Don't worry, she's a good woman. You'll like her when she comes later."
Jin don't know what he should do now. The man that he loves is just right in front of him and it may be his only chance to get him back. He hasn't informed Maki about Kame waking up yet. Whenever he presses her number on his handphone, he would lack the courage to press the green button and end up pressing the red one. He knows he should tell Maki, but he just wishes to spend some more time with Kame before Maki takes over him.
Kame has fallen asleep again and he had a peaceful smile plastered on his pretty face. Jin bent over and his lips were slowing moving towards Kame, but then he hesitated for a moment when their lips were only a centimetre apart, and then turned away. He shouldn't do this; he knows he shouldn't be doing this to Kame. Afterall, Kame has only just woken up from his coma and Jin should take things slowly. It's just that ... It's just that Jin has been waiting for so long for this day that he could no longer control the urge to hug Kame tight and kiss him like the world is ending the very next moment.
"Shit, Kame. You are making me crazy over you. Damn damn crazy over you." Jin muttered under his breath.
Jin stood at a corner and put his arms around himself and started tearing with happiness. He had been controlling his tears. The moment he saw Kame's eyes looking at him, the moment he realise that Kame was no longer in coma, he heaved a huge sigh of relief. Then, happiness took over his body and he felt himself almost dying of elation. Kame was finally awake! After one year of coma, he's finally awake! Every single day, Jin never failed to read Kame the story he had written. It was about them; from the day they first met till the day of the accident. Jin even read up on almost all the books on hastening the waking up of coma patients and tried almost all ways to help Kame. No matter how busy Jin was, he would never not visit Kame. He would always spend at least an hour or two with him in the hospital, and every day before he left, he would whisper "I love you" in Kame's ears. His efforts were not wasted afterall. Kame has finally waken up, even though it took him one whole year. It doesn't matter, really. To Jin, as long as Kame wakes up, it doesn't matter how long it takes. Afterall, they're only in their twenties and have many years ahead that they can spend together.
Jin reluctantly took out his handphone from his pocket and started dialing Maki's number. This is the right thing to do, he convinced himself. 'Follow your mind, not your heart', Jin kept repeating.
"Maki? This is Jin."
"Oh, hello, Jin! What's up?"
"Umm ... Kame is awake."
"What? Are you serious??" Jin could hear happiness and shock in Maki's voice.
"Yeah. But the thing is ... Kame has lost his memory, and he cannot remember anybody. I'll tell you the details tomorrow. He's asleep now, so maybe you can come over first thing in the morning tomorrow?
"Yes! Yes! Of course! I'll be there! Thank you, Jin! Thank you so so much!" Maki was crying.
"Alright, so see you."
"See you! Bye!"
Next morning
"Morning, Kame." Jin smiled at the sight of Kame trying to pry open his eyelids and pouting.
"Morning." Kame reciprocated Jin's smile. "You're up early."
"I didn't sleep all night at all." Jin just wanted to see Kame longer, at least before Maki gets here.
"Eh, why? Work?" Kame creased his eyebrows in concern.
"Er, yeah. So I need you to get back up real fast to help me." Jin gave Kame a hard pat on his back.
"Yeah, I'll get back REAL SLOW ..." Kame gave a toothy smile.
"How dare you talk back huh!" Jin placed his hands on his hips.
"I'm surprised I open up to you so quickly too. It's as if I know you forever."
Jin didn't expect Kame to say that. He suddenly felt a little shy, yet beaming with happiness.
"Kame!" Maki burst into the hospital ward.
"Er, who is she?" Kame whispered into Jin's ears.
"She's Maki, your wife." Jin whispered back.
"Kame! You're really awake! Thank God!" Maki was crying and she ran towards Kame to hug him. Kame awkwardly pushed Maki away. He didn't feel good that a stranger was suddenly hugging him. Afterall, he doesn't know her.
"I'm Maki, Kame. Do you really not remember me?" Maki's voice was filled with horror.
"Sorry, I really don't remember you. I only know that you're my wife through Jin." Kame knew what he had just said was hurting, but it was the truth.
"You do not remember Jin too?"
"No, but it seems like I open up to him real quickly. I think he and I were really best friends." Kame looked at Jin and smile, treating Maki invisible.
"Jin ... Can I talk to you for a moment?" Maki held Jin's hand and walked towards the door.
"I know this is unreasonable, but Jin ... can you leave Kame's side for a period of time?" Maki's hands were trembling. The fact that Kame doesn't remember her is too big a shock for her.
"Why? Maki, why?" Jin felt his heart wrenching. The thought of not being able to see Kame was tearing him apart.
"I want to be the only one around him so that he will come to rely on me and eventually remember me." Maki looked into Jin's eyes and Jin knew Maki really meant what she said.
"Okay, Maki ... I will leave Kame ..." With that, Jin walked away, clutching his chest hard.
