His immortality side effect was keeping the strange illness at bay from actually killing him, that was the good thing. The bad thing being contrary to his expectations of his own abilities, it had still handicapped him quite well. If you count the fever, the inability for his body to tell if it was hot or freezing, and the rash as "handicapped".
As it was... he wasn't doing his usual more stellar job at being unobtrusive. It's hard trekking when you're bordering deathly ill, okay?]
