[Background]

She first appears in chapter 34, in which Voice accidentally removes the sacred sword from Setsuna’s body, thus killing the body itself. She dangles upside down, taking Noise and branding her with the seal of a demon, thus turning her into a channel of a sorts. She then impersonates Noise and walks in on the enraged Princess in an attempt to sow lies and discord into her mind. When the Princess sees through her guise, she readily sheds it, revealing herself to be Satan Belial, more readily known as the Mad Hatter. Playing around on a violin, she easily escapes capture of the guards by disappearing at will and killing them with the violin bow, using it like a knife. Arakune recognizes her as one of the great demons, and amused, she confirms it. Announcing herself as the Mad Hatter and that she has come under the Demon Lord Lucifer’s orders to this particular plane of hell.

Not even allowing for them to react, she immediately paints a picture of gore with her words, stating that it is in the best interest of the country to make allies with the army of the Demon Lord and for the princess to swear loyalty to Lucifer. However, the princess refuses, screaming, and the Mad Hatter stills. Staring at the princess, she wonders if the princess is afraid of her. Jokingly, she pulls out a bouquet of flowers and flirts with the princess lightly. Then, she tells the princess that whenever the princess is to call the Mad Hatter, she will appear, thus not swearing loyalty to the princess but giving her the choice to call for her aid. She then disappears into the shadows, taking her hat with her.

Kira explains that she is a demon - with sweet speeches, she charms and seduces people and her very breath is poison in another’s ears. She enters the man’s dark side of the heart and takes control. That is what it means to be a demon, and Belial is a shining example of it.

The next time she appears, it is in Chapter 39 in which Kurai is explaining the hierarchy of heaven and hell to Setsuna. Upon the mentioning of Sheol, the lowest level, she appears out of a shadow brandishing a parasol. A dramatic entrance ensues, complete with feathers, blood and shadows in which Belial simply melts out of the floor. Upon her arrival, she immediately greets them with a proposal - there is but one way to revive the messiah’s fallen body, and she knows what it is. Greeting the messiah, who is in another body at the moment, with familiarity, she introduces herself and playfully flirts with the messiah with honeyed words. However, before she can kiss Setsuna’s hand, Setsuna pulls his hand away, knowing that a demon can plant a demon’s crest through a kiss. Laughingly, she ignores that, and goes on to reveal that only one possible being can revive the body of the messiah, and that is the angel Raphael of the four elements.

After some bantering, Setsuna decides to fight his way into heaven in order to meet with the angel Raphael. Everything going according to plan, the demon only smiles.

Next, we see Kurai on the rooftop, moping over Setsuna. She appears next to the princess and begins to flirt once more. When Kurai brings up the point about the demon’s kiss, she assures Kurai that she would never mark Kurai’s body in such a way. She then asks the question - what if there was another way for the Messiah to revive his body without having to fight up to the heavens for it? She reveals that demons are capable of using the arte of resurrection as well, and the only price for its usage is that Kurai must come to the bottom-most layer of hell and become the wife of the Demon Lord. Simultaneously, she controls Noise and uses her to spread dissent amongst the people, telling them that the Messiah is a fake and that the Messiah isn’t here to save them at all, but is in actuality an angel sent here to destroy them.

When Kurai refuses the marriage proposal outright, banter ensues, during which the hatter reveals that she is not male. She also reveals that she doesn’t think much of the gender boundaries, and doesn’t think they matter, really. After threatening Kurai that if she were to reveal the contents of the conversation to anyone else, the contract be voided, she disappears in a cloud of butterflies.

She appears next in Chapter 42, interrupting a scene between Lucifer and Alexiel by warning them about the revolt of the people and how they wish to destroy the messiah. When Setsuna runs down to save his own body, he confronts the people and gives them a rousing speech. However, near the end of it, the appearance of a black feather jars him, and a man dies spontaneously. Thinking that the messiah killed the man, the people roar in outrage, and Belial watches on, amused.

In the later chapters, Belial continues on as the role of the puppetmaster. Kurai eventually accepts the contract, and for the potion which would revive Setsuna’s body, descends to the lowest level of hell in order to wed the Demon Lord. There, however, she falls out of a window accidentally and ends up trapped in a labyrinth in which even Belial doesn’t know where she ended up, and goes through a horrifying trial. Meanwhile, Setsuna, Arakune and Noise travel down to the bottom-most layer of hell in order to rescue and bring back the princess (after the potion which contained the resurrection elixir shattered). There, they learn about Arakune’s betrayal and end up playing a little game with the Hatter, in which they search different parts of hell in order to find the princess and whoever finds the princess wins. Setsuna ends up in the grasp of the Lord of Hell Asmodeus, who turns out to be the incarnation of Lust and who offers him a way to attend the Demon Lord’s wedding in order to save Kurai. Belial finds Kurai in the domain of Sloth, and takes her back to prepare her for the wedding.

At the wedding itself, the bride is presented to the demon lord. However, it’s soon revealed that the bride is supposed to die right after the marriage and become one with the demon lord, who is basically the land itself, in order to stabilize it and keep the demon lord from swallowing up hell whole. However, Setsuna refuses to sacrifice Kurai and rescues her, and it’s then that Arakune drives a sword through Belial’s body. He then tells them all that he himself is a virgin and a descendant of the dragon keepers - making him an eligible sacrifice, and sacrifices himself for the sake of hell. Distraught, Kurai and Setsuna could only watch. Belial then opens up a portal in the form of a staircase to allow for the two of them to escape - as the whole building was collapsing and waves her hat in a fond farewell as she watches them retreat.

It is here that she is pulled from hell in the form of a dream self and dropped in Somarium.

[Personality]

The first thing to note about Belial’s personality is that while she is the Satan which represents the sin ‘Pride’, she holds none of it herself. While her pride manifests in the way in which she prides herself on being a servant of Lucifer and in her rejection of heaven, she holds no pride for herself, making her title very ironic indeed. Belial is a word which means ‘worthless’, and Belial’s character can be described as a worthless character. And she seems to revel in this.

To start unraveling her very complex personality, we first should tackle her ideas on gender. To put it bluntly, Belial finds gender disgusting. As she was once an angel of the highest degree, a Virtue, actually, she was born without a sex and only began to manifest a sex later on in life. However, she found the manifestation of sex to be disgusting, and rejected the body which god gave her, rebelling against god. Instead, she took pills which suppressed her gender transformation. So, while she is technically female, she has a flat chest and the slim hips of a young man - thus making her body into what she had been meant to be all along: worthless.

This betrays a strong will. For while Belial finds no worth in herself, going as far as to using the word ‘One’ in place of ‘I’ and ‘me’ so as to never directly refer to herself using any gender pronouns or any signs of respect, her will is something to be admired. She seems to revel in being told that she is worthless - the moment Lucifer opens his mouth and gives her the truth on what he thinks of her (as a disgusting, worthless being), she is enchanted by the truth and clings onto him for all she’s worth. Her will is manifested in the fact that she falls from grace with him, going down as far from being a Virtue to being the manifestation of Sin just for his sake. She is determined and stubborn, with a strong set of her jaws. The only thing she lacks is a proud tilt to her head.

She doesn’t pride herself in anything. This is manifested in chapter 61, when, after being rescued by Asmodeus, she explodes, all that pent of emotion culminating into a shouting match in which she proclaims that she knows she is but chasing after the shadow of a man who will probably never look back (Lucifer) and that this is probably a comical sight. She demands for Asmodeus to point at her and to laugh - it shows that she knows her situation all too well. While she revels in Lucifer, she knows that her love for him is disgusting and that if he were ever to reciprocate it, she would immediately fall out of love with him. It’s because that he is disgustingly truthful and disgusted by her in which she loves him so. It’s a twisted form of love in which she clings to his version of truth for the sake of grounding herself in this twisted reality.

She is dangerous. Belial is a master at honeyed words and gentle coaxing. She has mastered the art of lying and manipulation and can easily figure out the weaknesses of others to manipulate them to her advantage. She knows the inner desires of others, understands humans and demons and angels better than most people profess to, and is able to bring out the darkness within them out into the open. She knows how to get into the defensive layers of another being and strip them, layer by layer until they are nothing but a sobbing mess. She is meticulous, methodological and ruthless.

However, she has a weak spot for those with pride within them. She approves of the pride of others, and can easily see the worth in anybody. In doing so, she feels almost a sense of kinship with those who are extremely prideful and with those who are hopeless. In the end, she is weak towards those sorts of people, people who are blind to the truth around them and people who see the truth far too clearly. She is a woman of contradictions, but that’s just the way she is. She falls in love easily with those around her, and while that love is never like the love she exhibits for Lucifer, she is easily taken by others and will let them know such a thing.

She is loyal. This is without a doubt one of her strongest points. However, she is only loyal to Lucifer. She can lie, betray and backstab any number of people, but her loyalty to Lucifer is unwavering. Whatever she does, she does for the sake of her demon lord, and it is best not to contest that. She never thinks twice of manipulating others for Lucifer’s sake, and while she takes into consideration

Belial also hates. She hates a lot of things really, but most of all, she detests herself. It’s that self hatred which is her undoing - she is conflicted throughout the storyline and she is unable to resolve her conflict simply because she doesn’t see the worth in resolving them for her own sake. While Belial may profess that everything she does is for her own sake, she, in actuality, would never think of doing something for her own sake. Whatever she does, it’s either for Lucifer’s sake or for the sake of another, for the sake of advancing the plan, for the sake of destroying another’s life, but never for her own sake. This is because she finds herself ultimately unworthy.

She is fond of dramatic entrances, lies and cute things.

[Specialties/Abilities]

Belial is one of the Alcorn, an angel of high ranking (a virtue, actually) who fell from grace. In her case, she fell to the most powerful level of demon, one of the great Satans and the manifestations of sin. Her fall was quite great indeed. Because her fall was so great, she is exceedingly powerful, even in a manga in which every other character is a super-powered being.

First of all, she is a killer. She is capable of killing in any number of ways. For example, during her debut, she killed a demon using the bow from a violin alone, which is a feat. She doesn’t do a lot of killing, but she shows no remorse for it, and is amazingly efficient at what she does. She is also able to control and manipulate others into doing the killing for her, and is also capable of remote killing - beheading that civilian, for example, for the maximum effect during the riots. While her power in killing isn’t raw power per se, she is skilled and very, very quick.

Second of all, she is a manipulator. Her best job description would be a puppet master. She is able to take someone and plant ideas in their head through brute force, and draw out their negative emotions by planting a black feather or a kiss on their body. By doing so, she is able to both force them to act in a way that is unnatural to them and without restraint, and to control others like puppets. She can also use chess pieces to manipulate others, shown in the chapter with the Kelpie, in which she merely moves a horse on a grand chess board and watches as the pieces kill each other in real life.

Third of all, she can teleport. She can disappear into thin air, blankets of roses, shadows, mirrors, water, you name it, she can probably travel through it. It’s never explained where she goes, but she is powerful enough to hop through layers of hell in the blink of an eye. Sheol is said to be where the monsters are, and Belial is considered a monster amongst monsters. She can also make things appear, such as roses and hats and other trinkets, which is mainly for dramatic or humorous effect.

Last of all, her kiss. If she kisses someone, even on the hand, she is able to leave a demon’s mark on them and curse the owner. While this gives the owner certain powers - Noise grows stronger during her possession, and it grants the owner the ability to expel a monster through the mark and use the monster to kill others - it can also draw out the negative natures of others and drive them insane. Over all, the mark is the sign of a demon’s possession, making them a possible channel for her.

She also regenerates rapidly.

She doesn’t require food, water or, well, anything to survive. It’s like she survives on air. However, she can consume others if she chooses to, and she grows stronger if she does so.

She, however, can be killed. Not easily, but if one pulls her wings out of their sockets, she will quickly degenerate, like all angels do.

[Affection] Everything is fair game. Chances are she'll flirt with your character, so.
[Fighting] Fight, go ahead. She'll probably just disappear in the middle of it. Belial doesn't believe in random fighting. Injure -- go ahead. She's fast, deadly, but she screws up once in a while, so have fun with that. Death? ... no. D: She wouldn't die. She'd just... disappear and run away before the final blow falls.

[Other Permissions] I'd rather not have telepathic characters probe her mind, seeing as she's a telepathic character herself and is a general mindscrew for everyone involved. That, and her thought process is a little twisted. /o/ Other than that, almost blanket permission for just about anything else you want to throw at her. She's a tough girl/genderless being. She can take it.
