Notes - loosely inspired by Gackt's latest YFC blog
Gackt was slightly surprised when his doorbell rang at 10am on Christmas Day, but he wasn’t surprised to see You stood there with a bottle of wine in one hand, and a cake box in the other.
“Merry Christmas, Gaku,” You said cheerfully.
Gackt smiled back at his friend. “Merry Christmas, You-kun. I didn’t expect to see you today, I thought you were spending the day with your girlfriend.”
“I was,” You explained as he stepped inside Gackt’s home. It wasn’t exactly typical Christmas weather in Tokyo this year, but it was chilly enough for him to want to be inside. Gackt’s house was always nice and warm, “but I read your YFC blog.”
Gackt was walking ahead of You and leading him to the living area, not that You needed a guide, but he turned around and looked at his friend with puzzled eyes. “What about my blog?”
“You said you were alone,” You replied simply.
“So you thought you’d keep me company?” Gackt said, slightly amused.
“Sort of,” You answered. “I didn’t really believe you, so I called the staff and found you’d given them all the day off. Even Izumi. I know your sister is in America with her kids, and I also know that Jon invited you to spend Christmas with him and his family as they’re in town, but you turned him down too.”
Gackt sank down onto the couch, but didn’t look at You again. “You’ve done some research.”
“You shouldn’t be alone at Christmas.”
“Maybe not,” Gackt said dismissively. “What did your girlfriend say about you spending Christmas with me? Doesn’t she already think that we spend too much time together?”
You sat down next to Gackt and carefully placed the wine and cakes on the coffee table before them. “Yeah, she thinks that,” You admitted.
“I’m surprised she’s not on the phone right now shouting at you and calling me the devil for stealing your time again.”
“It’s none of her business,” You said. “Since yesterday, she’s been my ex-girlfriend.”
For a few seconds, Gackt didn’t know what to say. “I’m sorry,” he finally choked out, “she ended it because you’d rather spend Christmas with me?”
“No,” You disagreed. “I ended it because I’d rather spend Christmas with you.”
Gackt laughed.
“Hey, it’s not something to laugh at,” You said with a smile, “Christmas with her meant guaranteed sex and she cooks wonderful chicken. I gave that up for you.”
Gackt continued to laugh. “I can’t cook chicken, but I’ve never had complaints on the sex before.”
You began to laugh too. “I’ll take your word on that one.”
They fell into silence for a few moments, the only disturbance being the trashy Hollywood movie that still played quietly on Gackt’s big TV screen.
“Why didn’t you go to Jon’s?”
“I’d have been imposing,” Gackt answered. “He doesn’t see his family much and I thought the last thing they needed was a strange guy who’d spent most of the year dry humping their son at the dinner table.”
You laughed again. “That might have been awkward.”
“Maybe,” Gackt said before grinning wildly, “why yes, Mrs. Underdown, I’ve had a great year with your son. He smacks my ass just right.”
“I don’t think that’s suitable for the Christmas dinner table,” You said.
“I didn’t think so either.”
You stopped laughing. “Why do you always end up alone at Christmas, Gaku?”
Gackt shrugged his shoulders. “I work too much. I’m a selfish boyfriend. I’m on Santa’s naughty list. Maybe all of the above.”
“You do work too much,” You agreed, “I’m not so sure about those other two things though.”
“We always end up here, together, don’t we?” Gackt asked. You didn’t answer, but the question had been mainly rhetorical anyway. “I’m alone at Christmas and you ditch your girlfriend because you don’t think anyone should be alone at Christmas.”
“That’s not the reason,” You said quietly. “I only ever do this for you.”
Gackt closed his eyes. “You don’t need to.”
“I know,” You replied simply. “But I’ll continue sacrificing chicken and great sex to keep you company.”
Gackt smiled sadly. “I appreciate your sacrifice.”
“Remember that year when you waited at the train station for that girl?”
“I can still feel the frostbite in my fingers.”
“So can I after we spent two hours singing in the streets of Kyoto together that evening,” You smiled. “At least your house is warmer and more comfortable than my old neighbourhood was.”
“I seem to be spending most of my life waiting for a woman that never arrives.”
“Don’t we all?” You replied. “Maybe we should stop.”
Gackt opened his eyes but stayed silent when he felt You’s arm loosely drape around his shoulders. It took a few seconds for him to get used to it, but he soon shuffled over and leaned back against You until the top of his head was resting gently against You’s jawline.
“Maybe we should,” Gackt said softly.
“Do you want some wine?” You asked hesitantly.
“Only if it comes with cake.”
You laughed. “Of course it does. It’s Christmas, isn’t it?”
You gently kissed Gackt’s temple before he stood up and went to fetch some forks and plates from the kitchen he knew better than his own. Gackt remained seated.
He knew that he’d never truly been alone at Christmas.

Notes
1) I'm 99.9% certain that the time Gackt waited at the train station, and the time they sang in the streets are actually two separate happenings, but they fit well together so for the purpose of this, it's the same thing.
