Day 14 - The House Gackt returned to the house the next day with You in tow.
“Please explain to me again why we’re doing this ourselves instead of hiring someone?” You asked.
“It’s so I can watch your rippling muscles while you work,” Gackt grinned. His voice turned serious when he spoke next. “I owe the house to do it myself. The house wouldn’t accept anyone else.”
You looked up at the house in question. “You talk about the house like it’s alive.”
Gackt smiled but made no comment.
“So that explains why you’re here,” You continued, “but what about me?”
“You have nothing better to do. I’ll repay you in sex. It’s this or the gym,” Gackt answered.
“All good reasons,” You said. “Especially the middle one.”
Gackt pulled a handful of weeds from the path that led to the house. “I don’t know how I got the reputation as the sex mad one in this relationship. You’re far worse than me.”
“I’m only like this because you’re so hot,” You said. “So, it’s still your fault.”
Gackt glared. “Shut up and pull up those weeds over there.”
You walked over to where Gackt pointed, but made no attempt to move the weeds. Instead, he continued looking at the house. “I bet this house was pretty nice when it was well kept.”
Gackt smiled. “It was. I mean, it’s nothing fancy or expensive, but it was warm, loving and safe. I’ll always remember how safe I felt here despite… everything,” Gackt said softly.
“Every child needs somewhere safe to return to, Gaku.”
“Where was your safe place?” Gackt asked, eager to change the direction he could feel the conversation heading in.
“My fort under the stairs.”
“You had a fort under the stairs?” Gackt asked.
“More a cupboard really that I claimed as the capital of the country I was king and master of.”
“You had an interesting childhood,” Gackt smiled. “I didn’t know I was dating royalty.”
“Royalty that pulls weeds,” You said. “Did you never pretend to be a king or anything?”
“I never pretended to be anything or made anything up,” Gackt said sadly. “I was accused of lying enough as it was.”
You smiled sadly. The wounds of Gackt’s childhood and the spirits that haunted it were still raw to the singer. “I guess our childhoods really were different, huh?”
“Doesn’t matter,” Gackt said dismissively, “our futures are the same.”
“That may be the corniest thing you’ve ever said, Gaku.”
“Then why are you smiling?” Gackt asked.
“I guess I like corny, occasionally,” You replied.
Gackt could only smile when You closed the short distance between them and left a light kiss upon his lips. When You stepped away, Gackt looked over his shoulder at the looming shadow of the house behind him. Gackt could feel the warmth and safety radiating from the house again, and he took it to mean that the house approved.
“Get back to work, You,” Gackt smiled. “You can’t distract me that easily.”
You sighed as he grabbed a handful of weeds and pulled. “Damn. And I tried so hard, too!”
Gackt took one last lingering look at the house, bowed in its direction and then returned to work himself.
