Summary - the new bass player, Sato, has a question that he wants to ask Gackt. Sometimes, it's better not to ask...

Gackt watched in amused silence as Sato, the newest member of the band, opened his mouth a couple of times as if he was going to speak and then instantly shut it again. The little bass player wanted to ask him something, Gackt could tell that, but it appeared that Sato was having second thoughts on actually voicing the question.

The rest of the people seated around the table, namely Chacha and You, seemed completely oblivious to the dilemma Sato was facing. They had a little bit of free time in the middle of the photo sessions they were doing and the four men were relaxing in their dressing room together while waiting for the next photo session to begin.

“Sato,” Gackt said, breaking the comfortable silence the four band members had fallen into, “I know you want to ask me something so just come out with it. I don’t bite.”

Chacha’s eyebrows rose in disbelief but the guitarist made no comment.

“It’s just something I was wondering,” Sato said slowly. “I wondered if…” he paused and then shook his head. “It doesn’t matter.”

“It obviously does matter as you’ve been trying to ask me for the last couple of hours,” Gackt pointed out. “We’re band members now, family, so there are no secrets.”

“It’s kinda… personal,” Sato replied.

“The best questions always are,” Chacha said with a grin.

You leaned back in his seat. “You should just ask, Sato. Because if you don’t, this guy here,” You said, poking Gackt in the arm with his index finger, “will just torment you until you finally crack and tell him.”

Gackt narrowed his eyes. “I don’t torment people.”

“Yes you do,” You disagreed. “You terrorise people and drive them to the edge of a nervous breakdown for sport.”

Gackt’s response was interrupted by Sato’s hesitant voice. “Well, that’s kinda what I wanted to ask you about, Gackt-san.”

Gackt looked confused. “What? Me allegedly tormenting people?”

“….No…” Sato said slowly.

“Then what?” Gackt asked.

Sato took a deep breath. “Do you promise you won’t kill me or kick me out of the band?”

Gackt laughed. “I promise to do my best. It’d be a nightmare to replace you this close to the tour.”

“Okay,” Sato replied, not feeling totally assured but willing to accept Gackt’s word. “The two of you are very close, aren’t you?” he said, gesturing towards Gackt and You.

The two friends nodded in agreement while Chacha nearly choked on his coffee. The long haired guitarist understood where Sato’s line of questioning was heading, even if the two people he was asking didn’t.

“Well I was just wondering if the two of you had ever… you know…”

Gackt swallowed down the smirk that threatened to break out across his lips. You was still confused.

“Because that would be okay, you know,” Sato added hastily. “I just wondered.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” You said.

Gackt casually threw an arm across the back of You’s chair. “He wants to know if we’ve ever had sex, You.”

“Ohhh,” You said slowly as Sato’s question finally sank into his brain. “What? No! We’re just friends, aren’t we?” he said, turning to Gackt.

You was surprised to see that Gackt was nervously biting his bottom lip.

“Yes, of course, just friends,” Gackt agreed. “But there was that one time…”

You’s eyes widened. “What 'one time'? We’ve never had sex, Gaku. I think I’d remember that.”

“I’d hope so,” Gackt agreed, “but you were pretty drunk that night.”

You paused. He almost didn’t want to ask. “What night?”

Gackt looked at him with sad eyes, his sunglasses having been discarded a couple of hours ago for the photo session. “You don’t remember at all, do you?”

“What night, Gaku?” You repeated firmly.

Gackt sighed and looked across the table. Chacha was sitting quietly, his eyes narrowed and scrutinising Gackt whereas Sato looked like he wished he’d never spoken. “It was Ren’s 20th birthday party,” Gackt replied.

“Ren’s 20th?” You answered. “So this night was apparently when we still lived in Kyoto?”

Gackt nodded. “You did drink a lot that night. Then again, so did I.” Gackt closed his eyes for a few seconds. “I don’t think that being drunk is enough to explain how we came to be in your bed together, naked though.”

You stared at Gackt. “We were in my bed together. Naked?” You shook his head. “I don’t remember this at all.”

“I don’t know what happened or how we got there,” Gackt explained, “but our clothes were scattered across the apartment, like they’d been taken off in a hurry.”

“Um, should we leave while you discuss this?” Sato asked hesitantly. Now he really wished he hadn’t asked.

“I told you earlier that we’re family and that means no secrets,” Gackt replied. “You don’t have to leave.”

That wasn’t the answer Sato wanted, but it was the answer Chacha wanted. He was eager to know what else Gackt would remember of this long ago night.

You didn’t know what to say. Gackt sounded sad and also a little shy, as if he both didn’t want to recall these details and was upset that You couldn’t recall them too. You ran his hands through his hair. He must have been really drunk that night to not remember any of this.

“And it was Ren’s 20th birthday party?” You asked.

Gackt nodded. “Yeah. I remember going to the club and I remember most of the night, actually, but my mind is a blank from the time between us leaving the club and then waking up with your arms around me the next morning.”

“I had my arms around you?” You asked. “And we were naked?”

Gackt nodded again. “I remember waking up and feeling really warm and happy, but a little sore because…” Gackt’s voice trailed off and his cheeks flushed with an uncharacteristic red blush. “I felt happy,” he repeated.

You was happy that Gackt hadn’t finished that sentence. He really didn’t remember anything. He didn’t even remember Ren ever having a birthday party.

“But you don’t remember if we actually did…” This time it was You who trailed off.

“No,” Gackt said. “I’ve always wondered since that morning I woke up in your arms but my memory has never returned.”

You’s next response was stolen by the dressing room door opening and the appearance of a staff member. “We’re ready for the next photo session,” the staff member said. “Who wants to go first?”

You was on his feet and volunteering before the staff member had even finished talking. “I will. It’ll give me some thinking space. You can understand why I want that, right?” he said to Gackt.

Gackt nodded his head in agreement but there was an air of sadness covering the gesture. “Thinking space is good right now.”

You nodded one more time and followed the staff member out of the room. Gackt watched You leave silently and continued staring at the door even after it had closed behind You.

“That was quite a revelation,” Chacha said softly.

“I wish I’d never said anything now,” Sato said, almost to himself.

Chacha patted the bass player on the arm. “Don’t worry, kid. It’s not your fault.”

Gackt was still staring at the door. “Yeah, it’s okay, Sato.”

Chacha hummed lightly. “None of it happened, did it?”

Gackt turned away from the door to look at his lead guitarist and new bass player. “Not a thing,” Gackt said with a smirk.

“Wait…” Sato said, slowly catching up with the conversation. “You made all of that up?”

“You will explain that to You and put him out of his misery, won’t you?” Chacha said, barely suppressing a grin himself.

“He’ll figure it out soon enough,” Gackt said.

A few seconds later the door flew open with a force that made the hinges groan.

“You’re a bastard sometimes, you know that?” You said, trying to sound angry but instead sounding only slightly put out as he was also suppressing a smile.

“I am?” Gackt said innocently.

“Ren’s 20th birthday party…” You muttered. “Ren didn’t even have a 20th birthday party because his parents whisked him off to Hawaii for the week!”

“Oh yeah,” Gackt grinned. “So they did. How did I forget that?”

“One day you will stop playing these mean pranks on me.”

“One day you’ll stop falling for them,” Gackt retorted quickly.

You glared at Gackt one last time before leaving the room again, whispering under his breath that he should choose his friends better. He could hear Gackt’s laughter from down the hall and despite himself, You found himself laughing too. Twenty years of being Gackt’s friend had desensitised him to the singer’s sense of humour and deep down, if he was honest, You enjoyed being the victim of Gackt’s pranks almost as much as Gackt enjoyed being the perpetrator.
