Abilities:
Waterbending (Mastery): Katara is the last water bender of her tribe. Initially, much of her water bending techniques were self taught, or things she'd found in scrolls since she had no masters in the tribe to teach her. It isn't until she meets Aang and they travel to the Northern Water Tribe that she meets a Waterbending master, and masters the element herself under his tutelage. As a master waterbender, she is capable of bending the element itself to her will, commonly fighting with streams of water and water whips, though she can also manipulate the temperature of the water to freeze it into ice, and bend other forms of liquid, such as soup and coffee. She was also taught by another Southern Water Tribe member she meets in the Fire Nation, how to bend water out of plants themselves.

Healing (Amateur): It is common knowledge that occasionally waterbenders develop a talent for healing with the water that they use. Katara herself was almost forced to learn only how to heal with her ability rather than fight, due to some rather outdated traditions; however, thanks to demonstrating her talent in a fight with the Master, Katara was taken in as his pupil and allowed to learn Waterbending techniques from Pakku, as well as Healing techniques from Yugoda. She has thus far learned how to heal burns (though she cannot remove scars from such without special blessed water from the spirit oasis). She can use her healing hands technique to put someone into a trance in order to help them restore their memories or break a brainwashing conditioning, but only temporarily. She can heal sickness, though not all of them, and while she can heal severe life-threatening injuries, she cannot heal internal injuries or birth defects.

Bloodbending (New): An ability Katara was forced to learn in order to save her brother and Aang, Katara has no great interest in actually resorting to use such an ability. Taught to her by Hama, an old, bitter woman who had been from the same tribe, it is a technique that permits a waterbender to command the blood in a person's body, and puppet them against their will. Katara finds the technique unethical, however, and hates the fact that she even knows how to use it. As such, she has no love for her fellow tribe member who made her learn how to use it. The only times she did use her blood bending in fact, was in desperation and when she was full of so much blind rage that she couldn't think straight at the time.

Strengths: She is extremely diligent in her bending, having been self taught until she met Aang and joined him on his journey to learn the elements. Then, when they reached the North Pole, she had learned enough from her own training and training under a Master that she became a Master Waterbender herself, and began teaching Aang.

Weaknesses: Katara is an amazing waterbender - but when she doesn't have her waterbending - and if someone can block the chi points that give her access to that ability, she is all but helpless. She has little hand-to-hand combat expertise, and knows it. It had happened once before, and the thought of losing her bending ability terrifies her. Her strength is average for a normal human being, so she can be overpowered both physically and in a bending fight if the number of enemies is more than she can handle.
As she draws her waterbending ability from the moon - or at the least, the moon influences the strength of her abilities, her waterbending is naturally strongest at night when there is a moon, or when she is around a large amount of water, obviously. If there is no water around her, she has nothing to draw on or fight with - she usually makes up for this by carrying a canteen of water for emergencies, but that limits her in combat. Though she's learned the ability - against her will - to bloodbend, she absolutely refuses to use it if she can help it. In fact, she considers it absolutely immoral and hates the fact that she even knows how to do it.

Background: Here!

Appearance: Here!!

Personality:
Katara is known in Team Avatar as the mother of the group. Because she and her elder brother (elder by a year) lost their mother when they were young (Katara was about.. 8, I think), and their father was away fighting in the war at the time, they were both forced to mature quickly. Despite the grief Katara must have felt at the loss of her mother, who was murdered by a Fire Nation soldier - (and though she doesn't know it at this point, he came to the village looking to capture or kill the last Waterbender (who was Katara at the time)) she stepped up to take the responsibility that her mother had. Cooking, cleaning, sewing, and when she had free time to spend with her brother, or by herself, she would practice her Waterbending. Others in the village helped, and she was further assisted by her grandmother "Gran Gran". Whatever she didn't know how to do, she learned from her grandmother.

She might have grown up to be serious and depressed all the time if not for her brother. The two are extremely close, both in their affection for each other and in age; and Sokka's occasionally infuriating behavior tends to spark Katara's bossy nature and temperament. Often the two will bicker, but never so much that the arguments get extremely bad - it's mostly a case of their differences clashing, and at the end of the day, they are siblings and bound to make up again.

Speaking of her temper, while for the most part she is a kind and friendly, social young lady, she can hold quite a grudge if she feels she's been betrayed or hurt. Anyone related to the Fire Nation would get the cold shoulder from her for all that they've done in her world, and in particular one certain person from the Fire Nation betrayed her (in her eyes) and another person from the Earth Kingdom had done the same. Both did it for reasons of their own and not specifically to hurt her per se, but she takes such actions very personally, and isn't above being antagonistic and even starting fights with the people who hurt her - if they aren't smart enough to leave her be, that is.

She does have her own code of ethics, along that note, and no matter how much she hates someone, even when she has the opportunity to do so, she will not take a life. When in battle, she'll fight just enough to incapacitate someone, disarm them or immobilize them so she or whoever she's protecting can get away, and no more. If she were pushed to a point where she would absolutely need to kill, she would be crushed by her own sense of guilt. The fact that she actually knows a technique that goes against her sense of morals (i.e. Bloodbending) is something she would much prefer to keep a secret, and so far only her brother and Aang himself knows.

Considering that many in her village are expected to confirm to the traditions presented them - i.e. be good, quiet, proper women, marry young and not make waves (harhar I pun), Katara upsets the status quo by rebelling against these beliefs. She's feminine but her readiness to adventure and fight sets her apart from the other's in the village, and even the waterbenders in the North Pole. Traditions there were even more stringent, and when Katara learned she was expected to only learn how to heal, and was not allowed to learn waterbending techniques, she'd actually challenged the Master to prove herself. She lost, but at the same time, won for not backing down.

She's a fierce fighter when she's protecting the people she cares about, and not likely to ever back down until either she herself is knocked out or until she's forced the opposition away. As mentioned, however ultimately she is kind and considerate, the mother of the group - and sweet enough to have earned the name "Sweetness" and "Sugar Queen" from the earthbender that travels with them. Of course she does have her moments... like when she doesn't get enough sleep.

She tends to get a bit cranky.

Strengths: Her compassion and her bending are her two greatest strengths. While she is not so full of hope and forgiveness that she would grant anyone a second chance, she is capable of forgiving someone who has caused her a lot of pain and trouble. Case in point, Zuko - though he involvement was more indirect, causing Aang trouble and the rest of the gang by association. She had given him a chance to change in Ba Sing Se, but he betrayed that chance, leaving her to not believe his redemption when he met up with them again. It wasn't until he helped her get closure for her mother's murder in a sense, that she was willing to believe he had changed.

Of the group, Katara tends to take the mom/big sister role, and plays that part well. She is selfless, considering Aang as the most important person in the world - both because he represented the person to bring an end to the war, and because he was a dear friend.

Weaknesses:
Though she was forced to mature more quickly than most teenagers, due to her father leaving to fight in the war and her mother being killed by Firebenders - thus Katara took on most of the responsibilities her mother had - she is still susceptible to certain insecurities most girls her age normally have. She can fall in love, she can get angry - she is not a perfect young lady, and she doesn't even pretend to be, nor try to be. She often butts heads with Toph, who is used to a loner lifestyle while Katara is used to teamwork, and if she doesn't get enough sleep at night, she tends to be extremely cranky. She is a forgiving girl, but if she's crossed even once, she tends to hold a grudge, and depending on the severity of the betrayal, she may not be willing to forgive that person so easily - or at all.

Hello? [ In the background, someone - probably one of the moogles - is coaching Katara on the proper use of the communicator. After a word of thanks, she turns her attention to the communicator again. ]

This is Katara, of the Southern Water Tribe. I'm looking for some friends of mine - and my brother. I know you're out there - Sokka? Aang? Toph - Zuko, Suki?

Please answer me - I need to know you're all okay, and safe. Where are you?

This communicator can get a hold of of someone in the town, right? If anyone has spoken to any of those people, please let me know - or tell me where they are so I can find them.

It was the staredown to end all staredowns. Katara was sitting on the ground, her arms folded, blue eyes steely and trying to process everything the ...creature had just told her. Moogle.

"How are you talking...?" Katara asked warily after a few seconds of silence has passed between the two.

"Kupo? The same way that you do, I guess. Are you feeling okay?"

"No...but I'll be fine as soon as I find my brother, and my friends." Katara answered, slowly getting to her feet.

The moogle - she couldn't help but think of it as some kind of bat-bear - looked uncomfortable, "Po -- it's... possible they haven't arrived here, kupo."

"You said our world was consumed by darkness, right?" Katara turned to the moogle, who nodded uneasily. "I don't believe that. No, even if that was true, they wouldn't have given up to something like that. Not Sokka, not Toph, Zuko or Suki - or even Aang. Especially not Aang. They're here, somewhere, and I'll find them. You can count on that." She had to believe it.

The moogle smiled, eager to encourage the newcomer as he -she?- passed the pouch of munny and the communicator to Katara. "I hope you're right, kupo! Good luck!"
