Piecing the Lyrics Together

Some chorus songs that strike my fancy come into my purview fully formed and ready for me to learn and make mine. Sometimes, however, I find I need to make some sort of change before I can feel right and comfortable with the song. In fact, it was epiphanic for me when I realized that songs -- particularly traditional songs, or songs that have ( Read more... )

Hi Steven

Bob Walser sent me a link to this - nice to see the songs travelling. That's part of the reason why we dig them out from the manuscripts. And I have no problem with you changing it to be just the way you like it. That's what the folk 'process' does.

We sang this at Cecil Sharp House in London last week and, as ever, it got people singing along loudly. And, as usual, we had the debate afterwards about how many angels there were. We always say 10 - but you go your way.

If you need a check on the lyrics, go to our website - www.martinand shan.net - and look under 'Dusty Diamonds'.

Best wishes

Wow -- thank you very much for this note. I hope it was clear that I meant no disrespect at all to your beautiful singing of this song, and that it was your singing and arrangement that made me want to stop and learn the song.

I have been enjoying the entire CD very much.

This past weekend I met a woman named Mieke who lives in or near Boston, and once we realized we both knew you she said to say hello next time I saw you. And since I may not see you in person til May Day or so, I'm passing the greeting along here. (I went to Arisia. There was contra dancing and Renaissance dancing and swing dancing and other dancing! I'd never been to a convention with dancing before, and I quite approve.)

Thanks for passing along the greetings. Doesn't Mieke have a wonderful sort of personal energy? I figure she told you how I know her (her husband, Brown University band...). This is a way cool small-world coincidence.

I, too, love the idea of there being dancing at a sci-fi/fantasy convention.

I didn't get to talk to her for long, but I liked her, and she seems to be a good friend of a good friend, which argues well all around. She said there was a Brown connection through her husband, but she didn't say it was the band.
