CHARACTER INFO
CHARACTER NAME: Trucy Wright (formerly Trucy Gramarye)
SERIES: Ace Attorney
PERSONALITY: Trucy is chipper, and very outgoing. She's very nice to pretty much everyone, and loves making friends. She's very playful, and often jokes around with people, especially her father. She and Phoenix have a kind of odd relationship- they aren't exactly father and daughter so much as they are partners in crime and mutually reliant on each other. Trucy gladly helps Phoenix in his poker games, and even using her apparent innocence to calm down the games if they escalate (after all, Phoenix is bound to have run into a few sore losers). She seems to live in her own world sometimes. Because of her time in and out of bars, helping Phoenix to win poker games and performing at bars herself, Trucy has gained a set of "questionable" morals.
Trucy is very bright. She might not be book-smart by any stretch of the imagination- she HATES Math and English, but is okay with Science (Blowing things up? Launching rockets? Baking soda and vinegar volcanoes? YES), but she's extremely street-smart. Trucy is very perceptive, and is amazingly good at reading people. Part of this is because she has the ability to perceive, but also because she knows how to read people without using her perceive ability. She's also very tenacious, and will help anyone until the end. She loves bedtime stories, arts and crafts (especially glitter!), and playing pretend. She frequently "adopts" people in her family. To her, family is more the people that you love, rather than just the people you're related to by blood.
Underneath it all, though, is who she really is. The constant happiness is partly a facade that she puts on. She treats the whole world as if it's a stage- you never let them see you sweat or get down! You have to keep on a happy face for the crowd, and she does this well. But underneath even all of that is a deep sadness- Trucy has not forgotten her mother, and her father has vanished into thin air. Trucy misses them more than she can say, but believes that they will come back one day, wherever they are. That's part of why she had Phoenix stuck together so much- they both lost very important things, and they stick together because they hold each other up. As Phoenix says when Trucy finds out that her father has died later in canon- "I'm the only one who understands how she feels right now", and it's true. They understand each other more than either of them really knows how to say, and once she trusts someone and feels that she's safe with them, then she will let her guard down. When she is sad, she simply doesn't look at people and stays quiet, and sometimes cries.
But not to worry- Trucy rarely remains sad (or angry, for that matter) for long, and she bounces back quickly! She doesn't hold onto grudges and is a good sport in all things, but she'll play pranks on and tease the people she loves. She's willing to play along with anything as long as something's in it for her- and "fun" is a good enough incentive for anything. She has a bit of an odd sense of humor, and due to being in and out of bars, knows enough cuss words to make a sailor blush (though she rarely uses them).
And yes, Trucy knows all about the birds and the bees (Phoenix tried explaining it to her once upon a time and only ended up confusing her with all of his metaphors until she finally went "oh! You mean like sex?", and Phoenix about fainted), and prides herself on what intelligence she does know. She's not above schooling those older than her when she feels she knows something they should know, or if she feels like they're being dumb. She can be very blunt sometimes, as children are wont to do- this coupled with her outgoing personality make her quick to simply walk up to someone and strike up a conversation because she thinks their outfit is pretty or something.
Her own sense of style tends to the dramatic and theatrical, and she will put together just about anything she thinks looks "neat" or that she likes into an outfit. She will probably need to be explained to why she cannot go outside of the house in sparkly red shoes, a pink skirt, blue plaid cummerbund, green shirt, a yellow jacket, and an orange hat...and she probably won't necessarily understand the meaning behind why she can't wear these outfits. They make her happy! What's wrong with that? Though, once she grows close to someone, she will copy their example and begin dressing like they do as her little way to show her love and admiration of them- in canon, her outfit in the same color of her father's (pink) and same style as her mother's (but with a big pink top hat like her father), and she continues this by wearing a blue outfit later in canon, after she and Phoenix have been together for a long time.
All in all, Trucy is a little beam of sunshine that wants nothing more than to make the people around her happy, and she succeeds, for the most part.
TIMELINE: Age nine- a year after meeting Phoenix, after she has been formally adopted.
CANON+AU BACKGROUND: Tucy was born in the European country of Borginia, to her mother, Thalassa Garmarye, and her father, Shadi Enigmar, who went by the stage name "Zak Gramarye". She was raised by the mother and father, and traveled with the magician troupe they were a part of- Troupe Gramarye. Her grandfather Magnifi had founded the troupe, and her "uncle" Valant was also an active member. Trucy's early life was spent being raised on the road with the Troupe, and she grew to be an intelligent, precocious child. She was very close to her family, and loved all of them very dearly. When she was four, an accident with the "Zak & Valant's Quick-Draw Shootem" routine occurred that rendered her mother blind, and Thalassa was injured so badly that Valant and Zak believed her dead. Her grandfather retired from the troupe, told Zak and Valant that Thalassa was dead (when he had actually sent her back to familiy in Borginia) and used the incident to blackmail Valant and Zak with Thalassa's "murder". Trucy didn't quite understand what had happened, and was simply told that her mother had "disappeared". She believed it to be like in a magic trick, and trusted that her mother would come back one day.
Trucy's childhood continued with life on the road, and she received no formal schooling. Not that she minded- what was school to her, anyway? She was born to be a great magician like her mommy and daddy! It came around that Trucy possessed the same ability as her mother and grandfather- the ability to "perceive" the emotions of other people. Zak used this to his advantage, having Trucy tag along with him at poker games he would play (her father was a gambling man and very into his cards) and help point out if someone was bluffing or had a good hand by reading them. Trucy was happy to help out her daddy any way she could, and Zak rarely lost.
When she was five, Troupe Gramarye performed at the Magician's Grand Prix event, but lost to up-and-coming magician Maximillion Galactica (who was with the Berry Big Top Circus- this becomes relevant later, don't worry. @__@). They lost on good terms, though, and Trucy "adopted" Max as and uncle, liking him very much.
In the next two years, Trucy's life was a whirlwind of touring. Troupe Gramarye was losing popularity and didn't enjoy the star status they once did- this led to her father gambling more and dragging Trucy along to more games to win money to make it by. When she was seven, she got her first magic trick- a puppet called "Mr. Hat", and learned ventriloquism from the Berry Big Top ventriloquist Benjamin Woodman when the Troupe and the Circus crossed paths again.
Magnifi also fell ill with liver cancer at this time, and went to a hospital. This, coupled with his diabetes, gave him roughly only three months left to live. Magnifi blackmailed Zak and Valant for the last time- calling them to the hospital he was in and having a revolver set out. The note he had left his students enigmatically read "shoot, one shot, square in the forehead". Zak, who arrived first, picked up the revolver and shot a doll next to Magnifi's bed, waking up Magnifi in the process. This was the correct answer, and Magnifi signed the rights to his magic tricks over to Zak. Valant arrived after Zak had left and Magnifi had fallen back asleep, and planned to kill Magnifi and frame the murder on Zak. He couldn't go through with it, however, and Magnifi awoke and said that he was too late- he had already willed the rights to his tricks over to Zak. As Valant left, he heard a gunshot, and ran back into the room to find that Magnifi had killed himself. Valant rearranged the scene, framing the "murder" on Zak.
Zak was arrested and at first hired the defense attorney Kristoph Gavin to defend his case. Kristoph was set to win the case flawlessly with forged "evidence" he had commissioned from a local artist. However, when Zak challenged Kristoph to a game of poker and Kristoph lost, Zak dismissed him as his council. Enter Phoenix Wright, who was able to beat Zak in a friendly poker match and was hired on to be his attorney at the last minute. Phoenix was all set to defend the case, and in the lobby the morning of the trial, Trucy showed up. Kristoph had used another child to pass on the forged evidence to Trucy and had tipped off his brother, newbie prosecutor Klavier, that the defense attorney would be using forged evidence. Trucy handed the evidence to Phoenix, and he tucked it away as the trial began. Zak assured Phoenix that, no matter what happened, he could not be found guilty for the crime.
The trial began, and everything was a bit touch-and-go until Phoenix found the right moment to present the forged evidence- a page apparently ripped out of the diary Magnifi had written in on the night of the suicide. The page "proved" that Magnifi had continued writing after Zak had left his room. Klavier objected and requested the court be cleared to bring in a special witness- Drew Misham, the father of the girl who had crated the forged evidence. He testified that it was, in fact, fake, and the case was suspended. Phoenix was to be suspended pending a disciplinary hearing, and Zak was called back in. The judge was prepared to give Zak a guilty verdict and tell him that he could appeal his case at a later date, when Zak simply responded that they couldn't sentence a person that didn't exist. He then vanished in front of everyone.
As it turned out, Trucy was Zak's fall-back plan, and this was to be her first "perfomance", making her a "professional" magician. When he "vanished" and exited the courtroom, Trucy used her puppet, Mr. Hat, to provide misdirection so her father could escape- the court bailiff chased her instead of her father, and when he arrived in the defendant's lobby, was shocked to find only a little girl instead of the "man" he had been pursuing.
Zak vanished, but luckily for Trucy, the Berry Big Top circus was in town. She sought refuge with her "uncle" Max and "auntie" Regina Berry. She stayed with them until they packed up and left two weeks later, and she decided to stay in LA in case her father ever came back- she didn't want to leave because she feared he couldn't find her if she did. After the circus left town, she showed up at Phoenix's office. In the two weeks that she had been gone, Phoenix had been frantically searching for Trucy- she could prove to the disciplinary committee that the evidence had been given to her, not forged by Phoenix, but Trucy was apparently nowhere to be found, and the disciplinary committee decided that Phoenix was to be disbarred (with only Kristoph Gavin standing up for Phoenix). He was packing up his "old" office after this when Trucy appeared again. Phoenix called her in and explained that he couldn't locate any living relatives for her, and, desperate to hold onto the only link he had to himself and the evidence forger and needing someone else in his life after losing everything, said that he would take her in and said she could call him "daddy", after a while. Trucy brightened up and started calling him "daddy" immediately, and said that she would help them to get by- she was a "professional" magician, after all!
Phoenix and Trucy moved into Phoenix's apartment until Phoenix could no longer afford the rent and they had to move into a smaller, one-bedroom affair. Phoenix took a few side jobs to get by, and finally landed a gig playing piano in the Borscht Bowl Club. His real job was playing cards in the club, and Trucy volunteered cheerfully to help him out with his job, just like she had helped her other daddy. Phoenix would bring her along to his games on the job and the high-stakes side games he played, Trucy providing both a good read of Phoenix's opponent and helping Phoenix to avoid getting the shit kicked out of him by sore losers (after all, who wanted to see a cute little girl cry for punching her daddy? Trucy could turn on the waterworks in a second!).
For the first time in her life, Trucy was enrolled in school, though she hated it, and had to start a few grades back because of the lack of any schooling she had beforehand. Phoenix put the paperwork into motion, and Trucy was formally adopted after living with Phoenix for a year. Trucy began to put on small magic shows at the "Wonder Bar" to help bring in extra money when she could. Trucy and Phoenix's family was built on mutual reliance and dependence- they had both lost everything, and were learning how to prop each other up and get by. Trucy still deeply believed that her father and mother would come back someday from wherever day "disappeared" to, and Phoenix tried to hunt down the man who had forged the evidence.
ABILITIES: Trucy has the ability to "perceive". This ability acts as an enhanced empathy, allowing her to read people and sense their emotions quickly. She can sense when someone is lying or is confident, and uses this to help Zak and Phoenix in their poker games, as well as sense the general emotions of a crowd she's performing to. This ability is static and she does not need a bracelet to use it, unlike her mother or Apollo Justice.
