It works differently for different people. I can see the logic of putting some distance between you in your case; Mole and I, however, did stay close, because the relationship didn't finish because either of us had done anything wrong. We actually split up because his self-esteem was too low to handle the fact that I genuinely cared about him. (Well, yes, he did make a complete mess of telling me that, but this was due to incompetence and fear rather than any kind of malice.)
In your case, a big part of the problem is that this man is too controlling, so if you don't call him, he can't try to control you. It may help to focus on that. There must be other people you could ring instead, or, failing that, you can chat to me if you've got Yahoo Messenger. :-)
I do have someone else I could call. It's just a matter of figuring out her time zone (she's in Georgia, which is pretty far away). Also, I'd love to chat with you! I don't have Yahoo messenger, but I do have a Yahoo account-downloading the software can't be too terribly hard, right?
My time zone is... h'mm... well, it's a quarter to four now. :-)
Yahoo Messenger is no problem to download in itself. I had to fiddle around to get myself an avatar, and even then I'm not entirely convinced anyone else can see it, but that's not essential anyway. Generally speaking I appear invisible (though I may stop doing that in a little while; the idea was to hide for a while to discourage someone I wasn't over-keen to talk to), but I can still carry on a conversation in that mode. So even if I don't look as though I'm there, try anyway. My handle is tenor_mongoose.
