My advisor told me that's what I should do, as has the professor and the registrar's office ("otherwise you'd get way too far behind"), but the petitions office has told me not to.
Yep, I second the thought that you should just go.
And ya bureaucracy is a part of the game. You might learn to get good at it, and that would be something good. Try to look at it that way. Don't let it drive you nuts. :)
I am another who thinks that just going and sitting in on the class sounds best.
Also, I'm not sure whether it would work in your situation, but after I had regularly attended a certain class that I wasn't registered for, I was allowed to do an independent study (in which the professor and I didn't meet regularly since I had already attended the class) the next semester for credit. It was nice, and I never bothered with the official auditing process.
