Worth it?

Alright, I've been a member for a relatively short while, but I think I have the rhythm down from lurking (both here and at academics_anon).  My situation goes something like this: I am a freshman at a small (less than 1,500 students) liberal arts school of good reputation.  I have some substantial academic scholarships, that's a mark in the "plus ( Read more... )

If you aren't enjoying it, you won't succeed. If you don't succeed, there won't be grad school.

I didn't look at it that way, but yeah, you're right. Oy. Figuring my happiness/ enjoyment into the equation wasn't really something I was thinking about. Thus far my priorities have been good school, money, majors, etc.

You know, just because you apply for a school doesn't mean you have to accept them if they accept you. What about looking around for schools that meet your needs, and then see what they have to offer you? Just because the price tag on a school is expensive, that doesn't mean that's what you're going to be paying, after all. Just be sensible and keep a realistic eye on what you can afford to actually pay (and don't forget to factor in travel back and forth and whatever other increased expenses you might end up with.) It might also be a good idea to take a linguistics class before transferring for a linguistics program if you haven't already, because learning a language and studying linguistics aren't really the same thing :)

I'm taking Latin 101 next semester as a directed study, but aside from Spanish... my current school doesn't offer much in the way of language-study. Yet another reason to transfer, really.

One thing you can do to try out a field if you're really stuck in terms of your own university's offerings is take a summer school class at another university that does offer the area you're interested in (or at least introductory classes). That'll give you a taste of it, as well as build your transcript for an eventual transfer.
