Though not with Art History, I have a similar experience. I had never before taken a Linguistics course. At all. Ever. And I decided that for some reason I just really needed to take the 414/514 crossover Syntax course. It's the same thing where it's intended for upper-level linguistics students and first year MA/PhD students.

I found that since there was a cross beteween grads and undergrads, the grading was just handled differently. I did have to do a lot of research on my own and it was a huge pain in the ass, but I got a C+ in the course (not badddd, could've been better). So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I would probably go for it if I were you, but be prepared to do a ton extra work on your own.
