Halloween is over, now it's time to plan for Mardi Gras

Awesome.  I'm totally going to be a cassowary for Mardi Gras.  I came across this amazing bird of paradise couture costume collection like two days before Halloween and got inspired to create a bird costume.  And while reading In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson today, I think I stumbled across the perfect bird to do.

Ah-mazing.

As soon as I saw the disembowel I was like BIRD OF PREY BIRD OF PREY.

It's possible I should be ashamed of how excited it made me.

Dude whatever, I knew that you would love it most of all. It's like what the velociraptor evolved into. Except these don't actually hunt, they eat stuff from the jungle floor. But they're important cause they're like the gardeners of the forest! And they're endangered!

First step is to find the perfect blue/black silk dupioni for my corset. Then I have to figure out if I want to try to get Fifi's to make me a wig for it or if I want to attempt to just mohawk my hair (which who knows what my hair will even be like by then). OMG and I need to make some crazy awesome blue and red neckpiece for it too. And giant talons for my boots! So I can kick and disembowel!!!!!!

I should do something to raise money for one of their conservation societies, that would be sweet.

Also, this doesn't quench my desire to dress up as a peacock, you know that, right?

You should do the peacock and then when you come down we can peck at people together! :D

At first I was thinking of doing one solid color on the corset, but now I'm thinking of maybe doing the front panel as aquamarine or something and the rest in black? Like this one but in those colors:

I know I found the original post you made by accident and I think that I'd probably seen them and forgotten. Cause when I tried to make the post your title came up and then I remembered her hats and stuff but maybe I blocked the birds cause they're so amazing and it kills me not to have them. Like, seriously. Fucking amazing.

I'm disappointed- the Field Museum in Chicago has Sue, the most intact T-Rex skeleton, a stego, a trike, and a few others, but NO raptor. Bastards.

Has a mostly intact raptor been found? I mean, they're still a fairly new species in terms of discovery (when JP-1 came out, the raptors depicted in that film were technically still "imaginary").

Would you like me to save feathers for you? Gryphons are white with the occaisional yellow bit, and the conures dropped feathers are usually red tail feathers. Let me know, I'll put the aside for ya.

I think it's a GREAT idea. Should look amazing!

Thanks, but I don't think it will be necessary. I'm not sure how much plumage I'm going to try to do because from what I've read these aren't especially feathery birds. They're flightless and one description I read made their feathers sound more hair/fur like than feather like. So I think I'm going to concentrate more on fabrics and stuff to get the look I'm going for.

If anyone can pull this off, it's you. There was a street called Cassowary Way near the house I grew up in. Now I know what that is! LJ is educational! :D
