Well, since my (few) entries over the summer have been about the softball team I'm on, Hendon Blue Devils, I figured I should wrap things up with that.
A really fun summer ended last night with a pretty good game between the Blue Devils and the Classic Blue Jays. We hadn't beat the Blue Jays this year, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the game. We got off to a pretty good start and by mid-way through the game we had an 11-1 lead. Things were going great! Great pitching, solid defence and good batting got us that league. The Classic Blue Jays started to get a few runs back here and there. At the top of the last inning the Blue Jays rallied to bring it within 4 runs. Bases were loaded with two out, and a sinking fly-ball was hit to centre field. The ball was caught and with that we won the game and the finals! The final score was 13-9.
I had 4 fly ball catches in the game. So, that was good - no errors is always good. I think I had only one actual error all season and that happened in the first game (which I think I wrote about). So, I'm pretty happy with that. My hitting was good for the first 2/3s of the season, but the last few games wasn't as good. I managed to go 2 for 2, with a walk in the final game and scored once or twice (can't remember for sure).
Thanks to Greg and Jacquie for coming out to the last game! You're comments got me as far away from you as I could get (only first base to start). Thanks!
I tallied up my hitting totals from the games I had kept track of but it's on my other computer and I don't feel like getting up. So, maybe I'll update with that at some point. I know I had around a .500 batting average.
It capped a really great summer for softball. The weather was great throughout the year, four of the 5 other teams were pretty competitive too. So, that made every game a fun and challenging one because each team had a chance to win on each night.
I had a great time being on the Blue Devils. It was a fun team, a competitive team, and one that wanted to win. After most of the games this year the core group of the team went out for some drinks and some food. It was a lot of fun and really made it more than just going to play a game each week. It was going out to play a game with friends who loved to play baseball (and friends on other teams too! Though some of them *cough* Greg *cough* are jerks.) We finished the year 12-4 (including playoff games).
Now, both the leagues I was in this summer are done and all that is left is a few pick up games and hopefully getting out to hit some baseballs around and toss some ball. Hopefully the weather will hold until at least the end of October.
I really hate baseball season ending. Not only will I not be able to play baseball from November to April but I'll get out of shape and have to start over next year. At the beginning of the year I could probably practice for 30-45 minutes before being tired and sore for several days after. This past Sunday we had a three hour practice and I didn't feel it at all the next day.
Once the skating rinks open, I'll be doing that again this winter but I'm going to have to look into finding some other winter sport to do. Speaking of which, I have to get new skates soon.
Anyhoo, baseball=good. No baseball= winter = bad.
