Steam-Powered Contest 1: Necklaces

Dec 08, 2010 12:15

Well, the pre-order postcards are no longer being offered, but if you missed out on those and wanted Steam-Powered schwag, don't fear! You can still get some nifty stuff.

But first. Reviews that I have been meaning to blog about for, oh, forever.

Sea of Stars RPG Blog which says, in part, "While it might seem that this anthology is aimed at a rather niche market, however if you have interest in steampunk short fiction and do not mind a bit of romance on the side, it may be well worth a read as it provides a new perspective." Nice!

rushthatspeaks has given the anthology a very thoughtful and mostly positive review on her blog. My favorite part was: "In general, this is a lush and arresting book, well curated, flowing, flawed, sometimes abbreviated, sometimes frustrating, almost never boring, almost continually surprising. I hope it gets read widely, both because it's relevant to a lot of ongoing things, and because, quite simply, it deserves to be. This is a major and impressive anthology, and I hope it finds its audience, or makes one."

Eee! Major anthology, kids!

And last but certainly not least... the wonderful bookelfe also rather liked the stories and has a breakdown of each for you. The quotable part: "It's also a book full of steampunk stories that are attempting, in a number of ways, to write steampunk that questions a lot of the assumptions of a genre that tends too often to fall back on nostalgic glorification of the grand old colonial days of the Great British Empire. So not only are these stories all female-centric and non-heteronormative, as the title implies, but they're punching back in other ways - most of these stories also incorporate race and class and religion and nationality in ways that steampunk tends, as a rule, not to do." Woot!

OK, time for the contest!

This is for one of two spiffy packages which includes the following: A copy of the book, copies of all the promo postcards and bookmarks, and jewelry sets (necklace, bracelet and earrings) for two stories: Beth Wodzinski's "Suffer Water" and Amal El-Mohtar's "To Follow the Waves." I've finished both necklaces and am working on the bracelets and earrings now. Pictures are under the cut to spare your Flist. Sorry for their low quality; they are cell phone pictures but I think they get the job done.

Suffer Water. Materials used: Metal gear charms, watch gears (no idea what the metal is on any of these, but I am sure it's not silver plate or surgical steel), picture jasper, bronzite, glass, agate, silver plate S clasp. Look hard; notice that the big silver beads are actually charms made to resemble nuts.

To Follow the Waves. Materials uses: Metal gear charms (again with the not knowing what metal, sorry!), gold plate chain and clasp, pearls, swarovski crystals, black seed beads, leaves and cubes, agate, copper beads and findings, tiger eye ...and one very tiny, subtle silver boat. The pendant, which I don't think you can see too well, is faceted quartz crystal with gold wire wrap which I did not make (I would love to be able to wrap wire even 1/8 so well!) I will be adding a couple other charms to represent the sea here, such as fish, but this is the basic idea.
