Are you familiar with James Alan Gardner as an author? I ask because his books- well the 2.5 of which I've read- definitely deal with disability issues as well as sex/gender ones. For example, the "Explorer" job is only available to people who have some sort of birth defect- for the explicit reason that then no one cares much about them because they're not pretty- and medical correction of such is not available to anyone who is born disabled but intelligent (it they are disabled and incompetent, the disabilities are corrected).

This is pretty dystopian, but it has some interesting twists and side-effects, which seem to be starting to play out as the novels progress.

I'm mentioning him, because I only recently heard about him for the first time, and have been quite taken with his very unusual approach to many sf tropes.

I have heard of him in passing! Thanks so much for the rec. I'll add it to the list. :)
