Read "The Devil Wears Prada" immediately. The exact thing happens to the heroine in that book. The boss in the book is a HUGE bitch )that really sounds nothing like your boss) but it's about a girl who is an assistant to an editor at "the" fashion magazine in New York City for a year so she can eventually work for the New Yorker. It's really great chick-lit :-)
