I love you for mentioning Damon/Alaric. I don't ship a lot in this fandom (too many underage characters) but I love the friendship those two have and the way it's acknowledged in canon. It's amazing the way names & character details will just sink into your head from prompts/Tumblr etc.

I'm probably not the target audience for this show but I love it all the same for its twists, characters, pacing and storylines.

There's a bit of handwaving on the mythology stuff and they almost lampshade the killing off of characters of colour so I can see why people do have issues with it.

LOL I've seen Damon/Alaric mentioned more than Damon/Elena or Katherine (sp?), probably because of the circles I hang out in in fandom.

Bonnie is the only lead character who is a person of colour and she is a witch. She has a lot of witchy ancestors too which almost fits the magical negro trope but works around it a bit by having lots of them be related and powers inherited.

The Damon/Alaric bromance is epic and the moments when the characters and show acknowledge it make me squee. This says it better than words ever could.

The Damon/Elena/Stefan stuff does initially seem very Spike/Buffy/Angel but only on the surface.
