Sasuke didn't see an attack. On the other hand, Kakashi doesn't generally just fall out of trees. And something is clearly going on. First the Hokage makes a post looking like he's just gotten out of a blender. And now Kakashi was... what. Knocked out? Knocked down, at least.]
Kakashi.
[Well. If Kakashi is fighting, what are the odds he'll get a response anyway? Pretty low. If he wants to talk to Kakashi he'd obviously have to get up and -
It's not his business.
In fact, the last time he got involved in Kakashi's business, it ended up with Itachi dead and nothing gained. His assistance had been meaningless. And Itachi died for it. Pointlessly.
He shouldn't have said anything. He shouldn't have said anything. He should have let it pass by. Sasuke can't help Kakashi. It's not his business. Stupid. God, that was stupid. He doesn't even know why he said anything. It was just an impulse that he didn't think through. He should put the Hitomi down regardless of whether or not Kakashi replies.]
[ Some time passes. About twenty minutes or so, before Kakashi manages to respond. ]
Hmm?
[ He responds as lightly as he can, but there's a tenseness in his voice that normally isn't there. And if Sasuke's listening close enough, Kakashi's breathing is a little ragged. ]
Re: Voicea_for_tioriSeptember 29 2009, 09:35:42 UTC
[Well. He's obviously just fine so there's no point in responding. Furthermore he is a bastard who tries to act cool by responding with stupid bullshit like that smug "Hmm?" when Sasuke can clearly hear that he's panting.
So.
Sasuke puts the Hitomi down.
It takes about thirty seconds of staring at it very intensely for him to figure that even if Kakashi is a stupid bastard, it's important for him to figure out what's going on. After all, if someone or something is attacking, it's in Sasuke's best interests to know.]

Slipped.
[ The word is careful. Curt and cut at the stem, because there are needles rising up his throat from where they've embedded themselves in his gut and if he says anymore it's going to come pouring out. He almost thinks he's poisoned, and maybe he is, with how his body isn't cooperating, limbs akimbo when he tries to move and weighted down. And it's only September, so he shouldn't be this cold and his dogs are gathered all around him and trying to keep him warm but not even they can keep out the chill when it's crept inside of him.
[Quite frankly, Gai might have missed this call for a couple more hours, if it weren't for them. Once he had finally left off with Sakura and Minato, he had decided to head home and relax; he hadn't expected an oni to come flying out of nowhere and snatch the Hitomi straight out of his hand. He could hear odd rustling noises that suggested a few were probably scattering his clothes all over the bedroom--again--and so he groaned in exasperation and gave chase.]
[The thing was making irritating screeching giggles as it flew, and Gai finally reclaimed his Hitomi with an athletic leap, sitting down to see what it had done to the thing; it looked as though it had only gotten to the network through random button clutching.]
[By the time he actually starts paying attention to what's happening on the screen, Kakashi is in mid-fall, and he gapes for a moment, before hastily replaying the post. How could he--what had--this wasn't right! A jounin did not just fall out of a tree lie that. Not unless something made

[ Well, I'm dying, Kakashi thinks he should say, but the last time he talked to Gai was an hour ago and they were supposed to rendezvous to retrieve their Hokage. An hour ago and Kakashi hasn't checked in yet and maybe now is the best time to do this. He hopes they're back in Konoha. Hopes Minato is safe.
Trusts that he is.
Because he has to be. ]
Yondaime-sama. Did you secure him?
[ The words are almost forced out a little too carefully. Their delivery all tight.
This is all that matters, in the end.
He almost wants to retch when the poison -- he's sure it's poison now, it can't be anything else but poison -- works its way through his stomach and tries to push its way up, prickling his throat. Swallowing against it only makes it worse. ]
[Gai doesn't like this. He doesn't like the fact that Kakashi is suddenly responding with only voice instead of video. He doesn't like the tight, choked, restrained way each word is so carefully spoken. He doesn't like the fact that Kakashi hadn't met up with them, or called them, or did anything even remotely close to what he had said he would do--it surely pointed to some sort of trouble, all around.]
Yondaime-sama is safe in Konoha. Kakashi, what happened? Were you attacked?
Re: [ Voice ]ura_no_uraSeptember 29 2009, 10:54:07 UTC
[ Safe.
Kakashi is relieved to hear this. But safe doesn't mean that he's okay. You can be safe and dead, or on the verge of death, but that isn't okay. And he knows Minato is in the best hands he can be in, short of Godaime-sama's, but that doesn't stop him from ignoring Gai's questions and asking: ]
Is he okay?
[ Minato's life has always meant more than his own. ]
[private to Sakura]youthfulpassionSeptember 30 2009, 04:26:13 UTC
Sakura-chan, Kakashi is either sick or poisoned; Pakkun is leading to me to where he and his pack are. I'd like you to come help, if you can--I'll send you coordinates as we go.
[Gai's expression is more serious and worried than normal, quite similar to how he looked as they rescued Minato; the world rushes past, wind whispering into the microphone as he follows Pakkun. The Hitomi beeps as he sends her the first set of coordinates--he'll fire off periodic updates to make sure she'll be able to follow.]
[ Voice ]ura_no_uraSeptember 30 2009, 04:26:25 UTC
How is Yondaime-sama?
[ Gai said Minato would make a "full recovery," but didn't go into detail. Or maybe he did, but Kakashi doesn't remember. He can feel the poison working its way through him. It's getting harder to keep his eye open.
Might as well find out what he can while he still can. ]
[When he sees this, he panics inwardly so hard that it's a frenzy. He had to force himself to stay calm because he had a lot of things to do and if they were under another attack ...
He looks at the screen and feels useless. Not for the first time.]
Stand up!
[It's a tone that's says a lot of things that he can't say now because he's more concerned with why Kakashi is on the ground and what if he's -
Iruka's afraid. And it shows. Even if he tries to sound encouraging because he's here and Kakashi's there ... somewhere.]
Please, Kakashi! Stand up! You can do it! Are you wounded?
Something twists inside of him when Kakashi hears him. He doesn't want Iruka to see him like this. With gravity keeping him weighted and the winter inside of him shaking through him. It almost hurts to breathe, but he thinks that might be from the cracks in his ribs when he fell. Nothing major. Not that it even matters anymore, with what strength he had slipping away from him and he wishes it wasn't ending like this.
His screen is shaking when it turns on ten minutes later.
[Break his heart a little more, why don't you? His worrying reaches the sky because Kakashi ... he looks horrible. And he fears the worst seeing Kakashi like this.]
Since when did something like this stop you?
[He thinks perhaps Kakashi is closer. Maybe he can get to him but Gai is already going. Sakura said so earlier, didn't she? And he had to stay here, finish the traps, keep Akira safe. But maybe if he could just - ]
You can't tell me all that training and you're letting the ground beat you? Come on, Kakashi. You can stand!
[It's desperate and he's trying to encourage him, to cheer him up, to keep him focused on something else other than the pain. He is in pain isn't he? With how the Hitomi and the entire feed shakes in his grip.]
[ It was easier when Iruka's tone was detached, and all that space between them stretched apart as the space between the stars. When Kakashi was the only one who knew the truth, carried its weight, let it crush him. Because this --
This is too much. Iruka's voice is so desperate and all Kakashi can do is listen. His limbs don't recognize him as their master, and the ground keeps dragging him down. Sapping at his strength, draining chakra. And there's poison in his blood, moving too quickly. Like time, which once used to drag on so slowly, now disappearing too fast.
And all Kakashi can do is watch.
(This is not how he pictured the end. Even if he always knew he'd die alone, he never thought it'd be like this.) ]
[ Konoha ninja are bizarrely and inexplicably weak.
What is this nonsense? Falling out of a tree?
Nagato does better than this while being crippled, living in a machine, vomiting blood, and enduring a punctured spinal cord and metal weights that drill holes within him -- that he feels every morning.
Even among all the pus and blood and bodily leakage -- and the inevitable risks of infections, and all else that has taken a toll on his form -- he has never been so useless as this video displays.
Even living as a thirty-two (no; thirty-three, as his name day passed recently) year old corpse, he has done better than to fall from a tree limb.
He is beginning to think Naruto's friends are especially fragile.

Stops. Dead.
