Stupid divide-by-zero error.

Also, is it just me, or does "This expression is typed incorrectly, or it is too complex to be evaluated. For example, a numeric expression may contain too many complicated elements. Try simplifying the expression by assigning parts of the expression to variables." not suggest a divide-by-zero error at allGotta love

Hmm. Is Access a dynamic language? Because if so, a divide-by-zero could end up with one of your numbers turning into a NaN (not-a-number), which could screw up the type of the whole expression later -- but that's just a guess.

It's a pretty bad error message, I agree.

By Access I just mean Microsoft Access - nothing fancy. And in this case, a divide-by-zero meant 4 hours of myself and someone else picking at the database until we figured out what in the world was going on.

My take-home lesson: it doesn't matter if you can't think of a reason the denominator would ever be zero - write an if-statement to handle zeroes anyhow. Sigh.

Which I wouldn't mind if they just gave me one tiny hint about where the error was. I admit I'm a newbie at Access, but not telling me what or where is just a little frustrating.

Let me just say this about Access... nulls are evil. They will screw up queries, joins, reports, whatever in ways you don't expect, and the software won't give you any clues to help figure out why things went awry. I have learned this lesson the hard way on several occasions. Consider yourself warned. :)
