It seems like the US would be more suited to nuclear power in regards to safety than say, France, due to the more realistic possibility of building the plant somewhere remote where, in the chance of a horrible accident, the damage would be much less than in the same situation in a much smaller country like France.
I don't know, though, it just seems like you'd have to bury your head in the sand to still associate nuclear power and nuclear weaponry as practically the same.
Nuclear power plants, even in the most catastrophic explosion imaginable, don't do the most damage in the initial breach - it's the massive release of radioactive debris into the atmosphere that's most hazardous, and this cloud can be carried quite some distance
