Where destiny with men for pieces plays;
Hither and thither, and mates, and slays.

It was called The Game.
The rules of The Game were very simple. At the beginning of each school year, the participants would each pick one female student as their “pawn”. The participant would have to stick with the same pawn for one semester, unless he cleared all stages of the game early.
The stages of the game were places scattered throughout the campus. There were six in total: any classroom, the library, the teachers’ lounge, the gym, the parking lot, and the clinic. Two pre-requisites also needed to be cleared in order to win: the pawn’s house and the participant’s house.
The objective of The Game is to have sex with the pawn in at least four of the given stages, including the two pre-requisite levels. The key rule is to stick with the same pawn all throughout. In order to prove that a level has been cleared, a fiber optic lens camera is concealed in a special spot located in every stage. The participant brings along a separate camera in the case of the pawn’s house. Whoever clears the six stages first receives a thousand dollars from every losing participant.
The participants’ real names have not been disclosed for security purposes, although rumor has it that the participants are all faculty members of an unnamed, high-ranking university in Tokyo. The Game has been in practice for the last four years, with one Prof. K.M. being the brainchild and winner of the first and third year. The second and fourth year was won by a Prof. R.H. from the Mathematics department. Both teachers were in their late twenties and have been in the service of their alma mater upon graduation.
Other than the rules stated in The Game, participants were free to do whatever they felt was needed to do in order to win, as long as they didn’t get caught. Others had used blackmail or date-rape drugs in the past, causing detrimental damage to the participants but not to the organization. The Game was a word of mouth concept, with no material basis to prove it, other than the camera recording which was automatically deleted after 24 hours on a website designed by a hacker with a history of shutting down government networks. He was also an annual participant and instructor from the Computer Sciences department.
Players registered themselves in a secret meeting that occurred once a year in changing locations. On the day of the registration, all players signed up for an account on The Game’s website, where they each deposited a thousand dollars in advance to The Game’s bank account through online transaction. Players’ progress was monitored through an e-mail, which also had a password-protected option to watch captured videos limited online. All videos had a 24-hour shelf life before being permanently deleted on the website.
If a player decides to withdraw from The Game, he is penalized another thousand dollars for the remaining participants to share. Naturally, the rest of the earnings are received by the winner at the end of the game, and the site goes offline until the new school year begins.
The fifth year of The Game commenced at the start of the new term, with twelve participants in total. Most had already chosen their pawn within the first week, but two-time winner Prof. R.H. had not yet found one to his liking. Typical of the subject he taught, he was cold and calculating in character, but his youth and good looks made him popular among female students nonetheless. This was naturally to his advantage, and perhaps a major attribute to his previous wins.
A week had passed since school started, and R.H. was just about to wrap up his Algebra 101 class when the door to his room opened.
A girl with cropped, black hair appeared. She was small and slender in stature, wearing a black blouse, beige shorts, and moccasin boots. She had a small face and her big eyes seemed rather wide with apprehension when she approached him.
“Sorry I’m late,” she stammered, handing him a paper. “I just came from the dean’s office.”
R.H. idly glanced at the paper. It was a notice of her late enrollment.
The bell rang.
“Miss Shinjo,” he drawled in a low voice upon looking at her name on the document. “Have you been given your schedule yet?”
“Yes,” she said while uneasily watching the rest of the students leave the room.
“Then don’t you think it was a little too late for you to join my class?” He raised his eyebrows knowingly.
She stared at him in aggravated trepidation. He reminded her of a scared child the way her eyes seemed bigger on her small face.
“I-I’m sorry, sir,” she said, flustering. “I thought I could make it.”
“I don’t allow students in ten minutes after I come in,” he explained, stacking his papers on his desk. “Please don’t do it again.”
“Yes sir,” She bowed in apology. “I’m so sorry.”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Miss Shinjo.”
The girl frantically bowed at him again before leaving the room as soon as she had come.
R.H. felt for the cellphone in his pocket the moment he felt it vibrate. He had a new message.
