I got my Cintiq! And spent all evening installin’ and calibrat’n. And had to do a quick doodle of ubernetTim, annnnd realized that 1) VGA input is nowhere near DVI quality. :( 2) I forgot that I can’t shade 3) drawing directly on screen (vs. paper) is still weird.

Cool sketch! I have had my Cintiq for a year now. I really like it, and it does take some getting used to. I was blown away by the DVI quality as well. I have a couple of Intuos' as well, and I find I like to do my line work on the Cintiq, and sit back and do the painting on the Intuos (probably b/c I don't have room to put my Cintiq flat) plus I like a little distance.
I get the cheap cotton gloves at the drug store, and cut out all the fingers except the baby finger to keep my hand off the surface.
I finally got the hang of Painter, and now much prefer it for painting that Photoshop. The brushes and pencils in Painter feel much more natural, as well as the workflow. If you use it, I learned a great short cut for sizing brushes on the fly with the pen button. Photoshop is better at prep and finishing though... gotta have both!
Can't wait to see what you come with with your new equipment :)

Tho i'm really bummed about the VGA quality... almost considering getting a small desktop just to run the Cintiq! I bet color calibration would be a lot easier with DVI, as well. Right now I don't know which monitor to trust. XD How do you calibrate your machines?
And yeah, I've seen a lot of guys at work use the pinkie glove - is that primarily to keep the screen clean, or are there other benefits? :)
back to futzing with technology,

It gets the LCD as close as it is gonna get to the Cintiq. Are you running yours off a laptop!?
I just use the cotton glove to keep any skin oils off the surface.

I did get a clear film to protect the screen. I'm pretty light-handed, but the screen on my work Cintiq got scratched up after about a year. I'm trying to get it all right with the home unit. :D
Thank you for the Spyder rec! It looks very complicated and mysterious. Hahaha! Once I get real need for accurate color (as opposed to fanart doodles), i'll definitely get one.

I'm still pretty awful about using my Cintiq for drawing; my usual tendency is to do a sketch, scan it, and then use the screen like pointlessly high tech tracing paper. :x I like the half-glove thing a lot; without it my hands often get all sweaty and weird and it helps keep everything moving smoothly. I'm left-handed, though, and I've found I have a lot of problems with things like that no matter what medium I'm using. ^^;
Also looking forward to seeing what new things you develop with this. :D
