it's so beautiful outside

Not that it ever isn't. But in Seattle proper we almost never get this kind of snow- the kind that sticks, that piles up on trees and cars and everything else, that settles in footprints. So I'm pulling on layers and a pair of Nick's snowboarding socks and bundling up all proper-like in anticipation of a beautiful walk to the bus stop ( Read more... )

Ooo, I want to see Pan's Labyrinth! I liked MirrorMask, though I can certainly see why you'd have those criticisms; it was indeed derivative, but I liked the main character and the drawy little design flourishes and the fact that, derivative though it may be, it was still a little strange. Consequently, I'd definitely be into seeing something that realizes the potential of what MirrorMask might have been.

You'll definitely enjoy Pan's Labyrinth, although it's impressively gruesome; I think that was what made it for me. MirrorMask was all smoke and mirrors, all very pretty but inaccessible, and Pan's Labyrinth is more Grimm-style blood and guts, and so feels more real to me.

Grimm-style blood and guts, woo! Maybe the 2 can fulfill different film cravings.

1. i am knish, not joeyknish.
2. i am not sure i'd call mirrormask derivative,at least that's not the first word that jumps out at me. i'd call it the word that i misread in derivative's place: decorative.

Woops. Who the hell is that guy?
And I would call it pretty goshdarn derivative; a lot of scenes were lifted entirely from other, better YA fantasy movies. You're not wrong about 'decorative', though.

I find it interesting that, while I watched it, Mirrormask just made me say "I wish I was watching Labyrinth," but in retrospect, the visuals make me think of Legend and the scene where the heroine is dancing in her gothy-goth dress. (I never liked Legend, so I don't remember much else about it.)
