It is inhumane, but it is very human. Are we the only species that seeks vengeance? Besides my cat, who punishes me if I stay out too long.

I think the otherwise-intelligent authorities are probably stuck having to kill these animals out of pressure from the general public. If someone is killed by an animal, people will ask if the animal's been caught, and if not, why not. You can't argue to the average person that the animal didn't do anything wrong, it was just doing what came naturally, etc. People will fear that the animal is still out there, waiting to kill again. We put down aggressive dogs, so why not bears, they may think. Punishment is necessary for justice, too, right?

I don't like it, but this is how I see people.
