Age of 5, are they sure? That goes against other research I've read in Korea on marraige...and most of that research was done even a little earlier, around the 1980s...

For the most part I think Korean society is well above American...but the one thing I am forever grateful for is that, being a woman, I was raised in America. I'd hate, hate, HATE to be a woman in Korea. Even now it seems women have much more freedom, but I think the exact same associations exist, just portrayed a bit differently.

And I always wonder, who the heck imagined that women were the lowest of the low, and why did society believe him? (Confucius, obviously.) Why, at this point a long, long time ago, didn't women fight it? Sometimes I almost feel women are partly to blame because they don't argue it, especially not Korean women. I tried explaining to my students that the reason we are so different is because Korea still hasn't had its women's rights movement, and I don't know if it ever will.

Maybe women did try to fight it but got shot down.. I don't know. That's a good question.

I think part of it is that things need to change in the educational system. Even something as simple as adding more of womens accomplishments should give some hope to young students. You know, like in America women can dream of being president.. you ask most of your students in Korea what they want to be and the smartest girls will give you doctor.. most will give you something like baker or other domestic things.

I also am thankful every day I'm not an Asian woman in Asia. I really especially feel bad for unattractive or heavy women because so much emphasis is placed on looks here.

Oh, maybe the 5 year old thing has to do with old style arranged marriage? I dont know really..

One Korean prenatal genetic clinic offers STD tests with hymen reconstructive surgery, so that women can be free from her “history” of past sexual experiences

THIS. WTF.
