i thought you would want to know...John Oldewurtel from anime club has passed away in Japan. Here is a facebook group where people have written memories about him - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=50122521355
From the group: "As of Friday, Jan.16th, 2009 2:30pm ET, our dear friend John Oldewurtel has passed away. The only details I know is that he was riding his bike in Japan and was hit by a car."
Oh no! I'm so sad to hear about that... I hadn't heard from him in so long but I just figured he'd quit LJ (which I think he had). It's surreal to think that someone we hung out with so much is gone.
It's quite a shock for me too, and I'm really sad... but thank you for letting me know. I'm glad so many people have fond memories of him.
I think a bunch of his Vancouver friends are going to Maryland...I wish I could too.. :( But yes, I've passed it on to a few people already...he was such a great guy.
"At the time he was working in Japan, teaching English with the Peppy Kids organization, enjoying life tremendously.
He was walking back to his apartment after visiting a friend when he was struck by a car. The driver did not see him as it had just gotten dark and had been sleeting and raining. He was taken to the hospital unconscious, suffering from severe head trauma and respiratory failure. He never regained consciousness. He will be missed more than words can say by his family and friends.
Viewing will be this Saturday, January 24th - from 3-5pm and 7-9pm Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk 7110 Sollers Point Road Baltimore, Maryland 21222"
