Of Eywa and Things Which Are Elementary

Mar 04, 2010 15:14

Real life has been exploding all over me in the past few months in a way that I don't like, and I'm not exactly up to talking about it. So, I figure now is a good time to talk about a couple things that everyone else has opinions on.

How about that Avatar thingy? )

movies, sherlock holmes, reviews, fic, critiques

In re: the alien sex0rs, I refer you to Tiger Beatdown's post: Reasons I Laughed Out Loud, Offending Several Fellow Patrons, During The Major Motion Picture 'Avatar.'
#3. The Ultimate Intimacy.Okay, so, what the mystical tribal people of (blue) color do instead of sex is to stick their exposed nerve clusters (they have them in their hair!) together and connect to each other’s nervous systems. That doesn’t seem all that exciting to me - although maybe it would if the nerve system you were connecting to were being stimulated by some extremely pleasurable activity, like, say, actually screwing - but they are hippies and mostly I’m just glad they’re not blowing bong hits into each others’ mouths and talking about their deep spiritual connection to the trees. Well: not talking about that more than usual. Talking about the deep spiritual connection to the trees is foreplay, as it turns out. But you know about the nerve-clusters-equals-fucktimes thing, yes? It’s on the Internet; it will be on the DVD; James Cameron has made it explicitly ( ... )

EXACTLY. Pretty much everything in that review, in fact. Particularly the Lisa Frank and the Evil People Who Are Evil All The Time. The harder you look at the movie, the more it falls apart.

You know, I've seen some of the Granada series, but I'm thinking maybe I didn't watch the best episodes. I liked it, but it just never caught me up. (Of course, the first episode I watched was in a classroom surrounded by slacker high school students who were taking a pop fiction elective so they could graduate. If you want any sort of adaptation destroyed for you, I highly recommend watching in that atmosphere. >.<) And it's true. I remember when I first learned as a kid that the whole deerstalker and curved pipe ensemble was basically a creation of the film and stage incarnations. I felt so misled. XD ( ... )

Something that may interest you: 15 Questions For Avatar, most of which focus on the dumb, dumb plot. You've probably also read When Will White People Stop Making Movies Like Avatar, because ... well, yeah.

Also, pockets of stupidity aside? I've seen a lot of happy fandom love for awesome female characters lately. I have no idea why, but it's confusing. In a good way!

Hahaaaa. I loved the questions. And felt sorry that as soon Ms. Newitz posted her article on io9, there was a sudden backlash of comments accusing her of being racist based on her reading of the film. The quote from the blogger that she put up there is exactly right; in America, talking about racism makes you racist. So people just don't say a word. It's depressing. >.<

I'm hoping that the attention women have been calling to the bitchery that occurs around female characters has something to do with it. I love slash as much as the next fangirl, but whenever I see people asking making their requests on fic challenges with bits like, "ugh, plz no 'female character A'. I can't stand her", I kind of want to hit someone. (My personal favorite comment? one person who was going off on how Uhura was such a bad choice for Spock, and you can tell because she *gasp* hugged him and asked what he needed. How dare she! He's a Vulcan! Any smart woman dating a Vulcan would know that's she's just making it worse for the poor woobie by trying to get ( ... )

Re the ladies in Holmes: I'd have cast someone different as Irene (Rachel Weisz comes to mind, maybe?), but still, yeah, I liked her and the way she was written. And I adored Mary, not least for the fact that she was more than happy to tell Holmes where to stuff it when he was being an ass.

Anyway. As I've often said, this was one of my favourite Holmes adaptations since the Jeremy Brett Granada series, and I really really hope there's more.

COMPLETELY unrelated: I learned this weekend that they put the Master in a Paul Smith suit, back in DW S3 there. Also, that is not John Simm's head CGI'ed onto n bodies in EoT. That is John Simm in about eighty different costumes and not being very happy about it. XD

I don't mind McAdams as much, though I can see why some people don't like her a whole lot (and I <3 Rachel Weisz, so that casting also would have been a-okay with me). It was funny actually, a friend of mine the other day was going on about how she has had this brilliantly managed career so far. She always seems to get just the right parts

There's definitely a least one more coming. RDJ made the comment that him winning the Golden Globe probably made it more likely, but they'd actually already commissioned the script because the film made over twice what they expected. Which surprised Hollywood very much. XD

Damn, Paul Smith. We knew he was a classy boy, I guess. It sort of scares into thinking what might have happened if he'd needed it personally tailored, though.... And yes with the costumes! They have bit on DW Confidential showing him sitting in every single chair in each different costume on. While he's bitching (in a very polite way) about how much fun it is not.

I think my main gripe with McAdams is that she's a bit on the young side-she's totally lovely, but Irene in my head is in her thirties. I could definitely see her growing into the role, though.

The funny thing about that film is that while it didn't have a huge-ass blockbuster opening, it has done exceptionally well on word of mouth. People just keep going to see it, repeatedly at times. Which is sort of awesome and makes me really happy.

Louise Page said he grumped a lot. She tried making small talk-"how's the kids" and so on-but apparently he just kept getting crabbier and crabbier as time went by. XD

I really need to do my Gally One writeup. Which, incidentally, includes a couple of really great book scores: a copy of Lungbarrow, and one of Damaged Goods, a novel RTD wrote in 1996, featuring Seven! And it's so very, very him. Incredibly so.

Yeah, the young complaint is completely fair. McAdams is more how I imagine Irene looking when Holmes first met her. At this point, enough time has passed

It was totally word of mouth and a little bit of viral marketing (there were posters of just Holmes and Watson's faces on telephone booths around here). A lot of people I talked to seemed to think it was going to be crappy and avoided it, but once they heard good, they ran off to the theater. And it was crazy sold out in the city for the first couple of weeks. And I almost forgot! I don't know if you've already come across it, but knowing your fondness of credit sequences, I thought you might want to see this.Haha! I can't blame him. Most boring day of shooting ever. Three dozen costume changes where nothing fits, and all you get to do is applaud and jump up and down in front of a camera for 30 seconds or so. Over and over and over. It's one of those "you forget acting is still just a job" moments ( ... )
