Name: Hanabi Hyuuga
Age: 10
Gender: Female
Fandom: Naruto
Timeline: During Pain’s attack on Konoha
History: (The short version).

(The long version with headcanon)

As the second born daughter into the main/head house of the noble Hyuuga clan, Hanabi was born into a life of privilege but also one of hard work and discipline. Her mother died of illness when Hanabi was quite young - while she was still two years old. As a result, Hanabi came to think of her elder sister Hinata as her primary female role model, only really feeling a strong sense of loss in the first few months after her mother’s death. Although polite, respectful and quiet like her sister, Hanabi was far more confident and willing to tackle a challenge. She also showed a great deal of natural talent for martial arts/taijutsu from an early age, and began to learn to fight less than a year after learning to walk. Much to Hinata’s dismay, Hanabi was consistently able to defeat her elder sister in hand to hand combat in spite of being five years younger. While this might have made some children arrogant, their father’s gruelling training and her adoration of her elder sister kept Hanabi’s ego in check. In fact, until told otherwise, Hanabi believed Hinata was letting her win to be nice.

As time went on, Hiashi began to give up on his eldest daughter as a successor to the Hyuuga clan, and focused his attention on Hanabi instead. The training was long and brutal and it often left Hanabi’s body aching all over, but she persisted. Her father’s opinion of her was important to her, and she didn’t want him to give up on her the way he gave up on Hinata. Hiashi’s opinion was made crystal clear when Hinata became a genin (low ranked rookie ninja). Her jounin-sensei (higher ranked teacher who would take a small team of genin out on missions) Kurenai came to the Hyuuga compound to speak to Hiashi because there was a possibility of death even on genin missions. Hiashi barely paused from Hanabi’s training, giving her some time to catch her breath before ordering her to get to her feet. Instead of excusing himself so that the adults could speak in private, he told Kurenai “Do as you like with her. A defect who is even weaker than Hanabi, someone five years her junior, is not needed in the Hyuuga clan” right in front of his youngest daughter.

Growing up, Hanabi was aware that there was some animosity between the branch and main houses of the Hyuuga clan. She had no idea of the extent of that animosity until Neji nearly killed Hinata during the chuunin exams. The whole sordid history of the clan came out during the chuunin exam finals when Neji faced Naruto. Hanabi’s father instructed her to pay close attention to Neji during that fight, as he had inherited the Hyuuga bloodline limit more than anyone in the clan. Hiashi told Hanabi that her sister did not even compare to him, and that Neji was probably even more powerful than Hanabi. She was surprised that he would be more powerful than Hinata, and even more so when told Neji was probably more naturally gifted than her, too. She watched the fight with interest, amazed that someone in the branch house had learned techniques exclusive to the main family by figuring them out himself.

Later during the fight, Neji revealed the nature of the cursed seal all branch family members were given - that it could cause excruciating pain or even death with only a handseal from a main family member. He also revealed that his father Hizashi, younger twin brother to Hiashi, had been sacrificed to save Hiashi. The head ninja of the Lightning country was in the Leaf village to seal an alliance. His true reason for being there was to try to kidnap Hinata to get the secrets of the Byakugan. Hiashi killed the man, but the Lightning country demanded his death and tension began to grow between the Leaf and Lightning countries. Hanabi was shocked to learn all of this. After Naruto narrowly defeated Neji, Hanabi noticed that her father had gotten up out of his seat. She learned later that he brought Neji a letter that Hizashi had written shortly before he died, explaining that Hizashi had chosen to take Hiashi’s place - not as a branch clan member protecting someone from the main house, but to protect his brother and the village.

Learning the clan’s history affected Hanabi. Although her father’s brutal training kept her busy most of the time, she made an effort to reach out to the branch clan in her own small ways, such as attending Tsunade’s inauguration as the fifth Hokage (leader of the village) with her cousin Neji and his teammate Tenten. At first, her efforts were treated with cold politeness. The bitter divide between the branch and main houses wasn’t so easily forgotten, even with the relations between them slowly improving. As time went on and she persisted, individual members of the branch house began to warm up to her. When Pain attacked roughly three years after Neji aired the clan’s dirty laundry for all to hear, they strived to keep her safe because they wanted to rather than solely out of obligation. Hanabi was frustrated that she had to be kept in a safe house with her father when she wanted to help. Still, she did her best to be mature about it. She understood that it was her responsibility as a main house successor, even if she privately thought that her place was with Hinata.

Character Personality:
Hanabi is an extremely hard working person. Although her father’s high standards have played a role in shaping this trait, some of it is her own inherent nature. If she is expected to do something, she will make sure she does it well. She may work harder at things she personally views as important or interesting, but she isn’t one to slack off. She is determined to put forth her best effort, and will push herself even when she’s so exhausted that it’s difficult for her to stand. Hanabi doesn’t know how to be idle. When told to take a day off, she has no idea what to do with her free time. Most of her hobbies and interests connect somehow to her training, and the idea of just “hanging out” with friends is strange to her. This isn’t to say that she wouldn’t enjoy it - it’s just not something she would think of to do on her own.

Hanabi holds herself to very high standards. Some of this is due to personal pride, some of it is due to seeking her father’s approval, and some of it is out of her sense of responsibility to her clan. Hanabi feels a strong obligation toward ensuring that her clan survives and thrives, and though she is still young and learning, she understands that as heir apparent, any of her actions will reflect on the Hyuuga clan. Hanabi doesn’t want her father to give up on her the way he gave up on Hinata until more recently, and she privately believes that clan leadership would be hard on her soft spoken and often timid older sister. In spite of being gifted with more natural ability, Hanabi does love and respect Hinata - particularly for her determination, growth, and for her compassion. Since Hanabi’s mother died when she was young, Hinata has been her female role model.

Hanabi is quiet and polite. She treats others with respect, and doesn’t use slang or foul language. She prefers solitary or small group activities to larger social situations, and isn’t one for seeking out frequent social interaction. Hanabi is confident enough as a person. She’s not always sure of what to do in social situations. She knows how to address others politely and how to behave herself, but she feels awkward at social events with larger groups. Depending on the situation, she may also feel that she’s got better things to do and that the event is a waste of time, though she has the manners and social graces to keep that opinion to herself.

In some ways, Hanabi is very mature for her age. When the Hyuuga clan’s dirty laundry is aired in front of a stadium full of people courtesy of her cousin Neji and she learns of some of their sordid history, Hanabi maintains her composure - even at the tender age of seven. She doesn’t cry, and she doesn’t shout. She simply listens very intently to what he has to say and observes her father’s reactions. In other ways, Hanabi is still a child. She is eager to have her father’s approval. She also hasn’t learned how to achieve a balance between hard work and leisure yet.

Character Abilities:
Byakugan - The Hyuuga clan has an advanced bloodline. Their almost white eyes have special abilities, including being able to see nearly 360 degrees (although there is a very small blind spot), being able to see through walls, being able to see at long distances, and being able to see the body’s chakra (energy) circulatory system.

Jyuuken/Gentle Fist - The Hyuuga clan’s martial arts style. They attack the body’s internal organs and chakra circulatory system with open palm and pressure point strikes. Even just a light hit can hurt because of this striking method. This ability also allows them to manipulate the flow of an opponent’s chakra, or even temporarily block their use of chakra all together if enough of the points on the body are hit precisely.

Konoha Academy skills - Henge no Jutsu (transformation), Bushin no Jutsu (basic illusion clones), and Kawarimi no Jutsu (substitution technique), in addition to projectile weapon throwing (shuriken and kunai mostly), making traps, stealth and basic battle strategy.

Character Weaknesses:
While being hard working is generally thought of as a good trait, Hanabi takes it to extremes. She will push herself even when her body is giving the warning signals that it needs a rest. This isn’t too much of a problem when training under supervision, but it’s a health risk if left unchecked. Especially if she’s ill or injured. Her pride and determination will make her try to push past that, even when resting and recovering is more important. Hanabi works hard at everything she does. She may be able to prioritize between what’s important and what’s not, but that still involves her putting in more effort than is necessary on things that aren’t important. Hanabi has two modes - hard working and extremely hard working. She simply hasn’t learned how to balance work and leisure, to the point that even her taskmaster father has had to instruct her to take a day off from her training from time to time. She needs someone that she respects to tell her that, because it won’t occur to her on her own. She’s at a huge risk of burnout.

Hanabi has some social difficulty. She doesn’t do normal ten year old kid things. As a result, she doesn’t relate well to her peers. She knows how to be polite and respectful, and maintains a certain composed confidence. What she doesn’t understand is the games and interests of other children. Hanabi relates much better to people who are older than her. She has friends, but she has never had any close friends before.

Psychologically, she is eager to please her father and strives to meet his high standards. Even with him absent, imagining what he would say if she gave up or if she failed at something causes her anxiety. If there was a character who started acting like a surrogate parent in game, she’d be affected by that person’s praise or scolding as well. She seeks approval from authority figures, but would likely not be too vulnerable to peer pressure.

[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]

What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?

With Soul Menace/Soul Force, Hanabi’s abilities will work similarly to Jyuuken/Gentle Fist, the Hyuuga clan’s fighting style.

Hanabi will still be proficient in martial arts, observant, and capable of throwing projectile weapons. She will have the physical strength, speed, agility and reflexes of a girl her age who engages in frequent, vigorous and gruelling combat training (ie. above average but well within the realm of human possibility). She will also know how to move quietly, take advantage of cover or battle advantages her terrain might offer her (such as running through a wooded area with a lot of low-hanging branches if her opponent is tall) and use basic sleight of hand tricks. Basically, all the skills she learned at Konoha’s ninja Academy that don’t involve chakra.

What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?

Hanabi will no longer be able to use Academy level ninjutsu techniques. She can only use techniques that do not require chakra. She will not have her Byakugan. She will also have to adapt to the differences between soul wavelength and chakra.

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Why your character should be a Meister: As a member of the Main House of the Hyuuga clan, Hanabi has been prepared for the balance of fighting and being protected. She has been trained to be a leader, but also understands the importance of trusting and relying on others. I think her hard working streak would also be an asset as a Meister. Once she accepted that she wasn’t going to be going home anytime in the near future, she’d be very dedicated to helping her Weapon become the best Deatchscythe he or she could be and would train rigorously to raise their resonance together.

Meister Ability: Soul Menace (Force) - The meister is able to drive their soul wavelength into their opponent like a physical strike, able to cause pain and internal damage.

[ SOUL INFORMATION ]

Soul Description: Dedicated, polite, confident, quiet, strong, determined

Soul Appearance: Hanabi’s soul is average sized, pale lilac coloured, and has a yin yang symbol. Her soul’s expression is alert and controlled.
