[Ken's stopped for serious time. He's lying back in bed, in the room he and Youji are sharing--the other man's nowhere to be seen--idly scratching Ratty's ears. The little purple Pokemon is bruxing happily at the attention.]...so, I was thinking ( Read more... )

[That particular question hits very close to home.]

...Two of my friends come from seventeen years ago. I told them some general details, but I might have... decided not to mention certain aspects of the future they would consider overly upsetting.

...seventeen? Damn, and I thought six was a long time. A lot happened in that time, though...

A girl with whom I have spoken has met someone from fifty years in the past, and France mentioned timeline differences that span centuries between his friends. Large disrepancies are surprisingly common.

Huh. Guess I should count myself lucky, then. Or...well, it's not so much the time as what's happened, is it?

I mean, if all I had to say was that I was older than him now, it wouldn't be so bad...

[And this would be Youji, taking an impromptu smoke break. He calls back with an extremely straight face.]

I'm actually on the other end of the equation... see, the person I know from home is the one who knows everything, and since I'm so used to being the older, more experienced, more attractive one between us, it's something to get used to.

What, you're saying I'm the more attractive one now?

I've known girls who prefer older men.

Everything's bloody sexual with you, isn't it?

I've heard that people sometimes... disappear, and go home. Do you think they remember what happens here when they return?

[He's quiet for a moment, thinking.]

I have people here from my world, but the subject of a time difference hasn't yet come up.

I don't know. I guess we'll find out if we go back, won't we? Maybe it just all seems like a dream.

[Ken lets out a short bark of a laugh.]

It's a pain in the ass. You should avoid it as long as possible.

Maybe. I'd be uncomfortable telling anyone about their own future if they'd remember it when they went back. It seems like it could potentially cause a lot of trouble.

[Yukimura smiles slightly, shaking his head.]

Perhaps I'll try to, it seems easiest to just not bring it up at all.

Yeah. Lot of trouble, lot of worry. And not much you could do about it.

[Ken's just looking thoughtful. He's not all that happy about any of this.]

Definitely.

...Hardly anyone from my word is from the same time. My best friend is five years ahead and the person I'm traveling with is from more than ten years before I met him.

[A pause.]

And...my father's from more than thirty years in the past, from where I am. As for what to tell them, I...guess it really depends on how much there is to tell.

That's gotta be rough. Keeping track of where everyone is, saying something off-hand that they don't understand...or hearing something you don't.

It's a bloody headache, is what it is.

[Then again, if Youji was from the same time as him, he wouldn't be Youji anymore. So it's kinda unavoidable.]

Well, if it was just little shit, I wouldn't be so bothered by it.

That's why I really haven't asked my friend anything about our future. I don't think I want to know.

Yeah, I can understand that. There was a lot I had to tell the two of them that came from the past--it didn't really feel right, keeping it all a secret. I guess what I'm getting at is that if it's that serious, maybe you should tell him.

Sometimes I wish I didn't.

[Ken rubs his face with one hand, pinching the bridge of his nose.]

...maybe. You're right about it feeling bad, that's for sure.

Wait, hold up-what the hell do you mean by 'time difference'?

One of my best friends just arrived here a few weeks ago. He's six years younger than I remember him being--than he was. There's a hell of a lot that we've been through together that he obviously doesn't remember, 'cause for him none of it's happened yet.

Nope. Wish I was, believe me. It'd make my life a hell of a lot less complicated.
