Personality: Subaru is a whole lot of things that can effectively be summarized as "puppy you'd cry over if you kicked". First and foremost he is exceedingly kind, to the point where he genuinely doesn't think of things like most people would. If there's a friend who needs five dollars, he doesn't think "what could I be spending this money on?" or "when will you pay me back?" He just unthinkingly gives, and doesn't expect much in return-- isn't giving what friendship is about? He frequently will go above and beyond just normal generosity, and he's very much the sort of person who empathizes-- perhaps too deeply-- with people. He feels their pain just like it was his own, perhaps worse, and will cry over things and people even if they can't muster up anymore tears for themselves. Conversely, he very rarely sheds tears over himself. Why would he? In his opinion, his life is going great, better than he could ever have hoped for! His sister is healthy and with him, he's got a great friend in Seishirou, he's doing well helping out Japan as the Sumeragi Head, and he's still maintaining good grades even with all his absences! If the absences start to take their toll, well, then, he'll just work harder, and if it means he gets a little less sleep, that's okay. He'll learn to like coffee, maybe. Subaru is hardworking and devoted, and while other people notice this, while other people see he's selfless to an alarming degree, he doesn't notice. It's just how things should be, to him; people should be kind and so it works out for him well.
Despite his generous nature, Subaru is also very firm. He can almost be cruel, in some cases, although the intent to be such isn't there. If you hurt someone, or you're cruel to them, then he can be cold towards you. You're the one who's messing up and his heart is with the victim. He does not like causing pain, and as an exorcist, he frequently works to resolve ghost's issues as peacefully as possible, often choosing to allow some small margins of pain to be inflicted upon himself instead of trying to overpower a ghost. His tactics usually work, but when they don't, he is capable of using brute force, as much as he'd prefer not to.
Subaru is extremely polite, and due to the fact that he's trained as an exorcist, he's fairly in-tune with the majority of his emotions. While he does wear his heart on his sleeve to a frightening extent, he also is very cognizant of most negative emotions like anger or sadness, and does his best to deal with them so that they don't interfere with anything. He very rarely has any sort of sudden outburst of anger (surprise and embarrassment are exceptions), and he also very rarely has large outbursts of happiness. Small smiles and light laughter are more his style, in contrast to his considerably louder twin sister.
Effectively, Subaru is very much the sort of man that most women would want to date-- quiet, thoughtful, generous, selfless and traditional. Unfortunately for most women, he's too busy with school and his duties as Japan's leading exorcist to devote any time to dating anyone; he's perpetually late and eternally cancelling lunch dates with Seishirou and his sister. He works hard to make up for it, seeing it as a slight on his part, but his work and devotion to everyone comes before what he views as pleasure.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Subaru is absolutely the very best at flailing and being kind. He's shown multiple times to be that the person-- the person that remembers you on your birthday, the person that thinks your dog that no one likes is cute, the person that will stand up for you when he barely knows you and no one else will. He's extremely devoted to humanity as a whole. He also sees the best in people, which can get him in trouble when he sees too much good in people. He can be particularly naive or gullible if he's not careful, although if he stops and thinks about things, he sometimes realizes what's going on.
Subaru is also extremely good with animals, by virtue of him being gentle and patient and wanting to be a zookeeper when he's older.
He fears not being good enough. In his line of work, if he isn't good enough, it could very easily get a lot of people hurt or killed, or have them suffer unduly. He desperately does not want that to happen. He also wants to keep his sister, Hokuto, safe from anything that might happen, and he wants to keep Seishirou-san safe.
Despite what it may seem by his nature, he's not incapable of hurting people: people who are very clearly in the wrong, such as bullying others, or hurting people or animals, Subaru can, will, and has hurt. Back off his defenseless critters/people.

Samples
First Person Sample: [a boy with black hair comes on screen, looking slightly timid. He takes a breath and then displays a cheery smile that seems genuine, if a little bit uncertain. his backpack is visible behind him, the contents carefully stacked outside of it. the trainer handbook and Guide to Pokemon Breeding are next to him, clearly leafed through.]
Ah-- hello! My name is Subaru Sumeragi, and-- I think I'm... still a little confused! I-- I think I'm supposed to be breeding Pokémon, and I mostly understand what that means, but I'm not really sure why! I don't understand how I got here, and i-if it's possible, I'd like to go home as soon as possible! My sister will be really worried.
[he falls quiet for a second, looking over at the Vulpix that is nosing through his bag attempting to eat his trail mix. Subaru lets out a quiet cry, dropping the Gear and grabbing the trail mix and frowning at her.] No! I don't know if you can eat that! [--off the Vulpix's sad look] If it's safe for you to eat, I promise I'll share, okay?
--Oh! [he grabs the Gear again and bows in apology.] Um, is this safe for Pokémon to eat? [and then, a little hopefully--] And is she... mine?
Third Person Sample: The house Subaru had woken up in was not his own. He crept outside carefully, jumping slightly when he realized there was someone else in the house-- Mom? She couldn't have been. Subaru nodded at her words, offering her an uncertain smile before being unceremoniously dismissed. A-- a Pokémon Breeder? What was that, and why was she so proud of him for going out to do it? Subaru looked around hesitantly, listening for any answers that might come forth or spring up... and was just as confused as he had been a minute ago.
He couldn't have been kidnapped... Right? He was still wearing what he had been before, and he didn't remember anything strange happening... Though he wasn't sure how he fell asleep in the first place. Sitting down, Subaru started rifling through the backpack he had, trying to figure out if there were any answers contained within that. Clothes, toiletries, a handbook--! That could be helpful. Subaru took the book out and started opening it, jumping when a quiet "Vul!" came from beside him.
"Ah--!" he managed, staring at the critter next to him who was very insistently trying to stick itself inside of his bag. "Hey-- hey, don't do that! You might break something!"
The Vulpix sat back and stared at him, looking supremely unimpressed before trying to get back in the bag again.
"No-- hey, boy, listen, be a good boy--" Subaru was rewarded with a growl for his efforts, and wilted slightly. The Vulpix looked at him serenely, then rolled over onto its back. Subaru blinked, processing this for a long moment, and then-- "Be a good-- girl?"
"Vuuulpix," it informed him, still apparantly waiting for attention from him. Subaru moved over to pet her, looking back and forth from the book. This was not helping his confusion at all.
