Every Pokémon has a one or two types representing its elemental affinity, not unlike mages. Their attacks also have these traits, and certain attacks are stronger against certain types of Pokémon. Graf Felsen, for example, is a Rock/Ground type, which makes him more or less invulnerable to Flying- and Normal-types, but as you saw, gives him a huge Achilles Heel against Water-type moves.

You should consider finding a Grass- or Electric-type to cover your weaknesses. I think someone posted a full chart to the network, let me see if I can find it...
