Oh, it's quite simple really, I'm surprised you haven't figured it out. We've been transported to a different world, into a region called Johto if you'd like to get specific, where the main focus on everything seems to revolve around the study, capture and forced battles of the magical creatures that inhabit the land, dubbed Pokémon to many. Many of the said creatures are feral and it's dubbed unwise to venture anywhere without one of your own as protection.
