[She doesn't know this guy, but she's been meaning to meet more people, so this's as good a time as any to say hello, right?]

Hey, congratulations! I just picked up my second badge this morning. It's pretty fun, isn't it? [Even if her battle that morning was... more frustrating than fun. But she remembers the thrill of her battle in Violet.]

It is, in a way. I know I really pushed my team hard today, but it was worth it, ultimately, so we're all happier. They might like winning even more than I do.

[ he's not a results kinda guy, but there is definitely something alluring about actually succeeding at something for once. ]

Nobody said anything about enjoying violence. I wouldn't have agreed to something like this if my Pokemon hadn't shown me that they're okay with battling. The ones that don't want to, don't.

I was proud of them, for being skilled enough to accomplish a difficult task. It would have been the same regardless of the nature of their victory.

Congratulations. Gym leaders are no pushovers, so earning that badge shows how much skill you really have.

Or how much my Pokemon have, at least.

[ taking credit, what is that ]

A combination of both. The Pokémon are the ones out there doing the actual fighting, so their strength plays into it, while the trainer determines the best course of action for them to take. There's also the relationship the trainer has with his Pokémon and the level of trust that exists between them.

...I'm starting to sound like a native of Johto, huh?

Heh, just a little bit. I know it's all true, and I've been over it before, but... I still can't help feeling as if it's them that deserve the most credit. They're the ones putting themselves in danger, after all.

[ but if he were the one doing the fighting he'd say it's the commander that deserves the accolades. ]

[Guess who's working part-time in the Center today.]

Yo, I see someone just won something quite important!

[ someone who's bearing witness to a giant pile of victorious creatures, that's who! Suzaku looks a little sheepish. ]

M-Mm, we've just come from the Gym.

Congratulations, then! It'll get tougher as you beat more of them, but I know you can do it.

Thank you. I hope you're right... I know they can, at least.

[ nods his head a little, indicating that Pokepile, which begets another surge of noises. ]

Thank you. It was actually... tougher than I anticipated. We could have prepared for it even more, but at least the result is the same.

That's good. But with this you should be able to formulate how hard you should push yourself for the next one--if there's a next one that is...

There will be. A next one, I mean, there's no point in stopping now.
