Fortunately she didn't look anything like his mother] - perhaps she's not responsible, but she knew enough to give me a change of clothes. There's even a spare pair of glasses in here.

Possibly. One of the popular theories is that this sort of thing happened because of a series of very strange and unfortunate events. On the other hand, strange and unfortunate events aren't thoughtful enough to remember someone's perchance for glasses.
