Character
Name: Akihiko Sanada
Series: SMT: Persona 3 (FES)
Timeline: Just after ‘The Answer’ (April 1, 2010)

Personality: The Akihiko most people see when they first meet him, and for many people the ONLY Akihiko they ever will see, is a shining example of the classic Golden Boy. He’s a sportsman, rarely losing a match, charismatic, good in his classes and usually pretty polite. All the kinds of things that earn him plenty of adoring fans. But… that image tends to break apart a little bit when one looks closer.

For a long time Akihiko Sanada was a young man obsessed. After being unable to do anything to save his younger sister from a fire as a child, Akihiko has spent most of his life focused on getting stronger. He trained his body to be the peak of perfection, and his skills as a fighter to be unmatched. That way no one would ever get hurt on his watch again. He was so focused on this goal that it tended to inch in on other parts of his life: he showed little interest in girls, being social, games… any of the things a teenaged boy would normally enjoy.

But by the end of the game, and even more so by the end of The Answer, this changes somewhat. While Akihiko was still very determined and focused on becoming stronger, the obsession loosened it’s grip. He came to realize that living your life making up for the past was no way to live, and that he wasn’t honoring the dead by refusing to let them go. The Akihiko we see by the end of the Answer is a happier young man, finally free from the self imposed weight of his own guilt.

Even so, Akihiko is still far from the average 18 year old guy. Aki is a fiercely dedicated and focused person, never the type to back down or give up on anything. This even bleeds over into a extreme competitive nature with anything from a serious fight to a silly bet over picking up girls. Akihiko does everything to the nines, and tends to sulk over losing. But for one so skilled and confident in said skills, Akihiko is not the type to approve of being fawned over. Even though he has plenty of fans who are more then happy to tell him how great he is, he tends to either ignore them completely, or get rather awkward: especially if said fan is a girl. In fact, girls in general confuse Akihiko. He doesn’t understand them in the least, so can often come off as icy or rude to them without meaning to. Or if he’s trying too hard, coming off as a bit of a bumbler. Social interaction in general can be hard for him if he’s actively trying, and he get’s almost adorably awkward, fumbling over his words or focusing on things he’s interested in without noticing that he’s babbling. A lot of times he just doesn’t seem to understand that such things can’t be ‘won’ the same way a fight can be.

But regardless of any awkwardness socially, Aki is a confident, driven person. Even to the point of being stubborn. Once he decides something he goes through with it, including spending 2 years trying to get Shinjiro back with SEES and getting grumbly and upset when he’s not allowed to join back into the fight after being injured. This stubbornness can even grow into a temper under the right circumstances, most notably with Shinjiro, but he’s by far not the only one.

Akihiko, overtime, has even managed to grow into someone others can look up to outside of his Golden Boy persona. He becomes almost the father figure to SEES (with Mitsuru as the very much the in charge mother), making sure everyone is in peak health and condition, backing up Mitsuru when it comes to organizing the team, and even being the one to find Ken after Shinjiro’s death. Even though his advice was blunt and a little harsh, it was honest and heartfelt. After all- he promised his friend that he would take care of the younger Persona-user no matter what happened. And Akihiko Sanada is not the type to break a promise.

Strengths/Weaknesses: In a combat sense, Akihiko is a force to reckon with. Even without his Persona augmenting his strength he is still a skilled Southpaw boxer. He’s both physically strong and light on his feet. But beyond that he’s also a strategist, often talking about his own and the teams strengths and weaknesses in combat. In Route this will easily carry over to his Pokemon team.

Akihiko is also pretty smart, consistently getting good grades in school. Though at least part of this is probably his belief in hard work and focus. So while he’s not a genius he has decent common sense… except when he doesn’t. In fact, Akihikio’s focus (or stubbornness) is a strong good point of his character. He refuses to give up or back down… but also has the good sense to let others take over if he knows they’re better at whatever is in front of them. He can take orders if needed, but also can play leader very well himself. In general Aki is -flexible-, able to adapt to things as they change, both in and out of combat.

Weakness-wise, Akihiko is -stubborn-, and often not in the good way. He hates losing, even in the silliest things. He often pushes himself too hard, and doesn’t always understand when others don’t do the same.

Socially he’s pretty blind as well. While not unfriendly he can come off icy if someone doesn’t catch his attention and his blunt honesty can sometimes seem rude; such as brutally turning down a rival school’s offer for a scholarship due to ‘not wanting to go to someplace that got second’ or outright saying he doesn’t know any of his fan girl’s names right in front of them. He’s especially blind with girls, and tends to ether ignore them completely, or end up a floundering mess.

And even though he’s mostly moved past it, he still feels some guilt for both his sister and Shinjiro’s deaths. He can’t leave anyone behind to suffer or die. And while noble in theory, this can be dangerous in practice.

He’s also ‘weak’ to Ice. Without his Persona this isn’t too big of an issue, but he DOES really dislike the cold, and doesn’t handle it well.
